Babcock, Red Wings continue to rally around CC’s Matt Sorisho

Red Wings rallying around Catholic Central forward who suffered a broken back, and this is a follow-up to an earlier story from the Free Press's Perry A. Farrell. Per DetroitRedWings.com's Bill Roose:

Mike Babcock has known high school hockey player Matt Sorisho for a few years. The senior was a linemate with Babcock’s son at Novi Detroit Catholic Central last season.

Last Friday, Sorisho, who was the Shamrocks’ top-leading scorer from last year’s state finalist team, shattered a lumbar vertebra in his back while playing hockey in a Michigan Development Hockey League game in Farmington Hills, Mich. The spinal cord injury required Sorisho to undergo a seven-hour surgery to remove the shattered disk.

Babcock has visited Sorisho a couple of times this week in the hospital, and said that the 17-year-old is in good spirits despite a long recovery.

“Obviously, his life is going to be different, but he can still have a significant impact on the community and be a significant leader,” Babcock said. “He’s a strong, competitive kid with a great family. They’ve surrounded him with love now it’s time for him to grab his life back.”

Phoenix Coyotes forward David Moss visited Sorisho on Thursday, and Roose reports that the family may need aid to pay for Matt's medical expenses:

A webpage has been established to collect donations to help offset Matt’s medical and other expenses, Babcock said.

“It’s important as the CC community – and I’m one of those people – and the Red Wings, too, we can help out any way,” Babcock said. “We have to help him out. His life is going to be different, but his life can be great and that to me is the critical thing. Easy for me to say, harder for him to swallow and adjust to. But I have no question, with the faith that he has and the family that he has and with the surroundings that he has and the mental toughness that he has that he’s going to maximize his potential and be a leader in the community that way.”

The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
