The Malik Report

Audio from the Red Wings’ 5-1 loss to St. Louis at the Wings’ prospect tournament ‘17

What a depressing outcome. The Red Wings' prospects dropped a 5-1 decision to the St. Louis Blues in the 5th place game at Centre Ice Arena, and the Wings ended their prospect tournament with a 1-and-3 record.

The room was particularly glum after this game, and understandably so--there wasn't just one or two reasons for the Wings' losing record, but whether it was a drop-off in talent on the 4th line and 3rd defensive pairing, an inability or unwillingness to play a simple, to-the-net offensive game, too many players learning through making mistakes, lack of experience at the tournament or personnel and coaching decisions, the Wings never showed their full potential, and that was hard for everyone to swallow.

After the game, I tried to spin things as positively as possible by speaking with Luke Kutkevicius, the game's only goal-scorer, but even Kutkevicius was feeling glum...

Givani Smith wasn't necessarily sure how to process the Wings' losses, so we talked more about training camp and his summer's training than anything else...

But Axel Holmstrom, having played pro hockey with Skelleftea, was a little more used to talking about tough topics, and he gave a wonderful interview regarding the team's disappointing performance and where it (and he) goes from here:

Kaden Fulcher was up-front and honest about having a difficult game, though he did feel that there were some positives to build upon...

And coach Todd Nelson spoke with the press corps for 8 minutes, addressing the team's shortcomings, the players that impressed him along the way, his belief that training camp will salvage the players' confidence levels, and he shared his take on trying to coach and/or play in a short-format tournament:

A common excuse I saw was that the wings hadnt had time to gel/play together. Isnt that true for all the teams?

Im glad this game was at 3:30. Otherwise i would have tortured myself by watching it.
