The Malik Report

Audio from the first day of the Red Wings’ training camp: KH, Babs, Alfredsson, Cleary, Weiss, etc.

Well I just spent my first day at the Red Wings' training camp, and I wish that I could have seen all the practices in their entirety, but I needed to skidaddle from Team Howe's practice to engage in some media availabilities.

I was in fact part of the scrum in which Ken Holland spoke with the non-early-arriving media (honestly, when the MSM'ers first got to him about Cleary, I was just watching the drills, being myself), and Holland spoke about the cap crunch that Cleary's addition creates, the additions of Alfredsson and Weiss, training camp, the Wings' move East and the push from below for nearly 18 minutes...

Cleary himself looked and sounded quite exhausted and emotionally spent, but he was very happy to be a Red Wing again...

Perhaps at the other end of the spectrum, Tomas Tatar seemed much cheerier before he found out that Cleary had re-signed, but Tatar remained upbeat while discussing his previous season in Grand Rapids, his goal of making the Wings on a full-time basis and his experiences at the Slovak Olympic summer camp....

Daniel Alfredsson was a little jittery--in no small part because he was grilled by TSN, and because the Toronto Sun's sent Mike Zeisberger here to simply cover Alfredsson's Wings debut--but he was polite and stated that he'll happily don #24, which he wore with the Frolunda Indians, to allow Cleary to continue wearing #11 (and I asked him about the Traverse City camp = a sort of forced road trip)...

Stephen Weiss was downright subdued...

While Justin Abdelkader was his cool-and-collected self as he talked about playing alongside Datsyuk and Zetterberg and the new guys fitting in...

I only snagged part of Joakim Andersson's interview...

The same is true for Grand Rapids Griffins coach Jeff Blashill, who was very polite as usual...

Brendan Smith was his enthusiastic self...

And Wings coach Mike Babcock was in fine sparring form, from refusing to assess Weiss or Alfredsson to discussing Cleary's return and rebuffing my question about the "push" the Wings' youngsters may be giving his very deep team:

Babs: “I was going to put him (Cleary) with Pav and Z until Abby got two (goals) today, so now I don’t know what I’m going to do.  Fortunately, I’ve got all night to think about it.”

KH: “At some point in time, as the season wears on or next summer, we’ll try to find a way to keep him (Cleary) in a Red Wing uniform longer than one year.”

just hoping Sammy is gone as a result of cleary being back.  does anyone else fear helm is basically done, when other injuries pop up before his back is 100% it scares me. Cant wait till the season begins

Say Mantha tears it up in camp and is on fire to begin the season, is there anyway he gets a chance this year. Especially if Jurco is playing well?

Never have been pissed at you, George.  Just think you are a weak-minded fanboi and Wings apologist who swallows everything management tells us.
