Andreas Athanasiou Will Start Skating With Lugano In Switzerland

via Bob McKenzie tweets,

RFA Andreas Athanasiou, who has yet to come to terms with DET on a contract, flying to Switzerland tonight, will start skating with Lugano.

Athanasiou has not yet signed a contract or made any commitments in SUI. Will assess his options once he begins skating there.

added 6:48pm, via Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Andreas Athanasiou and the Detroit Red Wings are farther apart in their contract stalemate -- literally.

Athanasiou is "headed to Switzerland tonight" his agent, Darren Ferris, told MLive in a text.

Ferris didn't elaborate, but Athanasiou is joining Lugano of the Swiss Hockey League to skate, but he hasn't signed a contract with that club or made a commitment to play there, according to Bob McKenzie of TSN.ca. He apparently will assess his options once he starts skating there.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland declined comment.

It would be nice to have both Frk and AA. But whatever. This team is swimming in high-end assets. Who needs him?

Yeah Homers, or he’ll beat you like you’re a girlfriend and his name is Voynov.

Did I win the lowest common denominator prize yet?

This situation is potentially going to get very uncomfortable for AA’s side.  Especially if Frk does well and Mantha can be a force, and AA still remains unsigned.

Dare I say…. it might even turn into a “Blashill was right” situation.  I wonder how that would go over in Red Wings Nation.

I say let AA go for the whole season.  If he tears up the Swiss leagues we’ll know he’s worth the money.  If he doesn’t impress out there we know Holland was right to hold out.  And if his fe-fes are hurt well he can start brushing up on his Swiss because the Wings own his rights.

Let him go. I don’t care anymore. The system is the system. He has no arbitration rights and still won’t unless he signs. I wouldn’t trade him either. Don’t give into a temper tantrum.

Drouin had one of those “trade value” diminishing sit-outs too.  Yzerman held firm, Drouin came back, and Yzerman still got a nice return for him when he did trade him.

What happened to the KHL, AA? I can’t see him making $1.9 M in Switzerland. And if he ever wants to play in the NHL the Wings still own his rights.  Suck it up buttercup. Sign a short term contract, prove you’re worth more, and either the arbitrators will agree with you or you’ll see that you overvalued yourself.

I’d love to see AA on the 3rd line, but no team needs a cancer in the dressing room.

Go Frk!

Drouin came back and played for the Crunch and then returned to TB.  Not at all similar to signing overseas.

via Gregg Krupa of the Detroit News,

Red Wings GM Ken Holland confirmed that the speedy 23-year-old forward, who scored 18 goals for an offensively challenged Wings team last season, called him Friday morning and told him he was off across the Atlantic to test the waters.

“He called me today just to say that he is going to Europe,” Holland said.

Asked how the conversation went, Holland paused and said, “Double-A’s going to Europe.”

All I know about this contract dispute is KH won’t give AA what he wants. Odds are KH will out wait AA if he wants to play in the NHL.

Best result is that AA plays for the Wings soon.

Attitude, cancer, etc etc ??  Did I miss this being proven??  I would rather have AA than Sheahan, for example.

This is a business disagreement.

It’s not a big leap.  Blashill spent the previous season or so essentially hinting and talking about AA’s work ethic, attitude, etc.  To be honest, as this draws out I can’t help but think Blashill was possibly right with those criticisms, and AA is maybe a problem personality.

TL;DR is that what AA is doing right now is basically reinforcing some of the previous criticisms of him.

If AA wants to be judged differently, the floor is open for him to show otherwise.  Will his ego let him?

Pretty ugly situation. I really wonder how much this has to do with money. I understand we all need to find a bad guy in this and try to put in a category of our liking, understanding, but too much is unknown. I think it’s all bullshit from both sides. 600K? Please. This doesn’t make sense from either side. It cannot just be about money. Ego? Sure. Making a point? Sure. But what loss for both sides. And us fans. Money? doesn’t seem like it. Dislike of one of another? Maybe.

AA should just sign the damn contract and move on. Two years goes by in a blink of an eye. Or just sign a one year deal, even if it’s lower (1.25M?).  AA has his reasons and as does Holland. I am sure it will come out in the wash down the road. But this sucks!

Kenny was stupid to offer 1.25 mil.
AA is stupid to have missed all this time and not playing.

In all reality, if he comes back, itll take injury or a couple weeks of practice time to get him back in. Then he’ll probably struggle. Even then, where will he play? Barring injury to a top six or even top nine guy, he’ll be stuck with sheahan and glenny.

AA ruined this for himself, whether he had a chance to play with Larkin and Mantha or not.

WAIT A MINUTE.

From the MLIVE article:

Athanasiou had been contemplating an offer from the KHL’s Ak Bars Kazan but a source said the Russian team withdrew the offer because the forward was asking for too much.

I really start to wonder exactly what AA wants and what KH offered?

I guess the Russians have monetary limits and/or AA is asking for a lot more than we think?

This was always frustrating to me now it is getting plain weird.  The Swiss teams offer would probably be less than the Russians offer?

I still think the the Agent is large part of the AA side which makes a scary situation

AA won’t make seven figures in any Euro league, and Ak Bars thought he was asking for too much money to play in Russia.

Kid, your options are incredibly limited.
