The Malik Report

A Simple Question- Will Ken Holland Be Detroit’s GM Next Season?

Helene St. James answers a few more questions from the fans.

The first question is Will Ken Holland be the GM next season?

HSJ: I anticipate Holland will have a role with the team, either as general manager or advisor. President and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Chris Ilitch, gave Holland a vote of confidence at the end of last season. Within the organization, there is very much the understanding that the team is overdue to struggle — when the Wings drafted Michael Rasmussen at ninth overall last year, it was the highest the Wings had drafted since 1991. Teams that have won the Stanley Cup since 2009 all have had at least a second-overall pick on the roster....

What it will come down to is whether Chris Ilitch sees the Wings as being in good shape to regain competitiveness as quickly as possible.

more plus a couple additional questions...

Sadly I think KH will still be out GM next year and may even get a short extension. (2 years)

omg lyk ken holland is literally sooooooooooo bad at his job seriously!

Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V

In all reality, he better not be. But the whole organization needs a shakeup in some form or fashion.

If that is true, that is a very alarming statistic - particularly when the draft is a lottery format.

UPDATE: It’s not true.  HELEN!!!! WTF.  http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/teams/dr00007475.html

Okay I reread her statement a few more times. This qualifies Jordan Stall who was selected number 2 in 2006.  I originally thought she meant they have drafted a number 1 or 2 since 09 AND then won the cup.

I’ll chill now.

I think she meant it like this.

Teams that have won the Stanley Cup since 2009… (as in the teams)

have had at least a second-overall pick on the roster (as in their roster), not that they’ve picked a #2 or better since 2009.

If it’s a dead horse, then that means the outcome is no longer in question.

So please, enlighten everyone, since you clearly know the answer.

Check this out, assuming Wikapedia and my 2 minutes of searching is right…

if you remove the Wings, you have to go back to 2002-2003 Devils as the only team to win a cup without a top 2 pick

That’s actually pretty impressive.

It’s similar to the thought that most of the stanley cup winning teams the past decade have drafted/developed their starting goalie. I forget the number.

And then the #1D / #1C theory.

What is?  Even if you think he had much to do with the roster pre 2002, he has been a disaster since 2013 and that’s being nice.  He had handed out cap crippling contracts that will hinder this team for years.  He embraces mediocrity and has not made any significant moves in years.  The fan base is clamoring for a smart, planned rebuild while the GM isn’t.  How is it that Vegas is the best team in the West after not being in existence and the NJ Devils hitting bottom and successfully managing their way back to dominance once again.  Since 2013this team has won one playoff series, I guess that is now accepted in “Hockeytown”.  This GM is a disaster for the future and needs to be replaced.  He has had years to plan for the rebuilds bad refused to do so, doubling down on awful contracts due to personal feelings or whatever.  He needs to go and clean out the whole front office including the scoring department

The only way for the Wings to have a hope of being better in the next two or three years, to the point of being playoff contenders, is if they shed some of the contracts belonging to the old guard and get rid of Blashill.

Otherwise, you will see the odd flash of brilliance but mostly mediocre results.

KH could be GM next year. Ilitch could also promote someone from within the organization (Martin, Draper, etc) to take the reins. Else, I’m not sure there’s anyone else out there who could take over the team and do well with it.
