The Malik Report

A Jolted Petr Mrazek?

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Looking at money: Signed through 2017-18 for $4 million. Restricted free agent in summer 2018.

Looking ahead: Of all the Wings who need a bounce-back season, none intrigue more than Mrazek. Shortly after his NHL season ended he went to the World Championship, where his mediocre play (1-2, .881 save percentage, 2.47 GAA) left the Czechs starting another goaltender once elimination rounds began. Then Mrazek was exposed in the expansion draft, and neither Vegas nor another NHL team (via trading with Vegas) was interested. Not even Dallas general manager Jim Nill, who ran Detroit’s draft when the Wings selected Mrazek at 141st overall in 2010, and whose right-hand man, Jim McDonnell, largely was responsible for scouting Mrazek in juniors.

It all adds up to a message that should jolt Mrazek out of a malaise that dates back a year and a half.

Shocking news. HSJ is criticizing Mrazek again! I mean, did you guys notice that Jim Nill, the guy who drafted Mrazek, didn’t negotiate a side deal for Vegas to claim Mrazek and then trade him to Dallas? I mean, that just shows how far Mrazek has fallen folks. Seriously HSJ? You couldn’t have possibly used a worse example. Dallas had Lehtonen, Bishop, and Niemi (who they later had to buy out). So why on earth would that organization have interest in Mrazek? Moron. I also noticed Jim Nill didn’t work out a side deal for Nosek. I guess that means he sucks. After Jim Nill noticed Helm was left exposed, I’m surprised he didn’t contact Kenny to acquire Helm. I guess that means Helm sucks too. Who cares if Dallas even has a need for these type of players right HSJ?

Also what about an update on Mrazek’s marital status? Because yesterday we learned that Abby’s recent marriage may bode well for the upcoming season, plus Abby is a self-accountable player. I guess Mrazek is none of these things. Pathetic journalism.

Not married, but have you seen his g/f? He’s doing quite well for himself. (I know your question was asked in jest).

I think Mrazek is going to have a strong season. It actually wouldn’t surprise me at all if he earns the starting job back this season, and not just because Howard inevitably gets injured at some point. I’m looking forward to watching how Mrazek responds to the adversity. If the response is good, I would imagine the Wings will want to keep him around.

Getting plowed over by your own dman will inevitably happen every season.

If that were his only injury in the last 4 season, sure. But the fact is, the only season in the last four that he has not had an injury that kept him sidelined for a significant amount of time was 2015-16. In 2013-14 he had a pretty bad knee injury, in 2014-15 he had a bad groin injury, then last season he had a groin injury that kept him out for two weeks from the end of November until mid December, then the knee injury where Jensen fell on him happened. It is disingenuous, IMO, to try to make it seem like his only injury issue is from the Jensen incident.

but maybe the tune would be different if Jensen hadn’t allowed himself to be manhandled into Jimmy. That tune might sound a lot like the one people were singing the last time Jimmy carried the team into the playoffs.

Yeah, I’m not disputing that his second injury this season was an unfortunate accident. But it doesn’t change the fact that he has had multiple other significant injuries that had nothing to do with someone falling on top of him. I’m not sure how what I’m saying is controversial. It’s just facts. The guy has had a lot of injuries the last four seasons. That doesn’t mean I don’t like him or anything like that. I like Howard just fine. But given his recent track record, if he gets through this coming season without a significant injury, it would be the exception to what has become his norm.

Come on, Helene. If you’re going to try to incite a riot, at least give a reason as to why “NOT EVEN DALLAS WHOSE CURRENT GM HELPED DRAFT OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG” would take Mrazek… like, I don’t know, having almost $11m tied up in goalies—not including the buyout of Antti Niemi—is a good enough reason?

I’m thinking I need to go back to college and get a degree in underwater basket weaving so that I, too, can get a job writing for a major news publication.
