The Malik Report
Paul here again while George continues to battle an illness.
Nothing to report from practice although I am sure there will be the customary "what do you think about tomorrow's game" questions.
If anything major pops up, I will post but for now, check out the battle scars Nyquist received from the high-stick in the Dallas game.
Jim Nill, the new GM in Dallas, discusses his philosophy on building a team, with a few Red Wings references.

from Doug Harrison of CBC,
The Red Wings are expected to promote Ryan Martin, the current assistant GM of hockey administration for the Red Wings, to take over for Nill, a married father of two daughters and one son.
“I’m looking for somebody like Jim Nill,” said Holland when asked what his search for Nill’s successor would involve. “It’s experiences, work ethic, knowledge and gut instincts. It’s having a plan.

from Bill Roose of DetrotRedWings.com,
Brendan Smith has no Stanley Cup playoff experience. The same goes for defensive partners Jakub Kindl andDanny DeKeyser.
Though their lack of postseason participation certainly sends a red flag to some, their inexperience isn’t much of a concern for the Red Wings on the eve of Game 1 of the Western Conference quarterfinals series against the Anaheim Ducks.
“We’ve really improved drastically in that area, probably the most improved part of our team,” coach Mike Babcock said. “With Howie playing the way he and the D able to get the puck going, we’re spending a lot less time in our zone. That allows you to be much better up front.”

Ansar Khan of Mlive reports the Wings will go with the same lineup for game one against Anaheim.
Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock has some veterans with extensive playoff experience at his disposal as the team prepares to face Anaheim in the first round.
But, there is no need to tinker with a winning lineup, so Babcock is not planning on any changes for Game 1.
“The guys who got us here are getting into Game 1,'' Babcock said Sunday, before the team traveling to Anaheim. “I’ve told the others to get themselves ready and to support the team.''

The CBC will air Mr. Hockey: the Gordie Howe Story on Sunday, May 28th at 8 PM EDT (it will air a week later, on Sunday, May 4th, on the Hallmark Channel in the U.S.), and the CBC posted an "extended look" at the film. It looks like it's gonna be good:
Somewhat ironically: the CBC's Hotstove Tonight crew on Hockey Night in Canada confirmed that the Red Wings will lose Jim Nill to Dallas "after the season" (whether that means before or after the NHL Draft that Nill tends to run for the Wings, nobody seems to know yet), but in revealing as much, the CBC's Elliotte Friedman stated that the Wings and Stars were trying to keep the news Tweeted by TSN's Darren Dreger quiet out of respect for a) Nill and b) the Wings-Stars game that Dreger chose to precede by FOUR minutes...
And in a not-so-subtle dig, Friedman stated that he asked Wings coach Mike Babcock about the Dreger Tweet suggesting that Babcock would end up leaving the Wings to join the University of Michigan, and Babcock was apparently upset by the insinuation that he'd leave the team--and he stated that he's not going anywhere until his daughter graduates high school in 2 years (assuming he's not a coach for life or nearly so, which he really is at this point).
Otherwise, the Hotstove crew talked about the fact that the NHL, the IIHF and the IOC are still attempting to hammer out the details of NHL participation in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, during the World Championships (the Worlds begin in Stockholm and Helsinki on May 3rd, and Glenn Healy reports that the security in Sochi is what you'd expect from a location about 200 miles west of Grozny, Chechnya, but the facilities aren't finished); they talk about Team Canada's roster for the Worlds; Healy states that the Rangers aren't particularly happy about being the visitors in two outdoor games for the 2013-2014 season; and they discuss Anschutz Entertainment Group president Tim Leiwicke joining Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.
About The Malik Report
The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
