Wings remain hard-wired to attempt to win on a nightly basis

The Red Wings returned from their "Bye Week" understanding that they're not going to make the playoffs, but asking a professional sports team to intentionally "tank" just isn't going to work when players and coaches are hard-wired to give their best, as MLive's Ansar Khan noted after the Wings' 3-2 OT victory over Vancouver:

"Coaches are coaching to win, players are playing to win every single game," coach Jeff Blashill said following Tuesday's 3-2 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena. "Management makes the decisions in terms of how they approach it from a managerial side. From the coaches' side, we're trying to win every game and as I've talked about lots in the last couple days, we're trying to maintain this culture of work ethic and attention to detail and selflessness. We'll continue to approach every game, try to have the very best record we can. That's our job as coaches and our job as players."

The Red Wings dealt Brendan Smith and Steve Ott on Tuesday, after trading Tomas Jurco last Friday. They are expected to move Thomas Vanek Wednesday, before the 3 p.m. trade deadline.

"It's not a fun position to be in, obviously," Justin Abdelkader said. "We got to look at ourselves. We put ourselves in this position. It's been a challenging year. We've had a lot of injuries, a lot of different things come our way. But at the same time, we're not going to lay down. We know what the standings look like and we're not out of it by any means. We've got to take it one game at a time and whatever 20 guys that are in the lineup find ways to win."

The Red Wings' captain agreed, as he told Khan:

A Wiles-y take on the Wings’ ‘fall from grace’

I'm eschewing a full game wrap-up from 3-5 AM for a trade deadline morning awake, and I apologize for that, but it does happen from time to time. Instead, I'll leave you for the night with some wise words from the Vancouver Province's Ed Willes:

With their extraordinary streak of playoff appearances about to end, there’s an instinct to look for some eternal truth about the Red Wings’ fall from grace.

But it doesn’t exist. After 25 years, time, as it always does, simply caught up to Ken Holland’s team. Henrik Zetterberg is still an effective player but he can no longer carry this team. The big free-agent signings — Thomas Vanek and Frans Nielsen — haven’t had the desired effect although Nielsen scored the Wings’ first two goals against the Canucks.

Most importantly, the young guns who seemed to be on the verge of stardom last season have all regressed in 2016-17.

Red Wings-Canucks quick take: OT win going away

The Detroit Red Wings got back to work after their "Bye Week," hoping to buck a losing trend as they faced the Vancouver Canucks.

The Red Wings blew a 2-1 lead in the 3rd period, giving Vancouver a point, but Detroit ultimately emerged winners in OT thanks to Justin Abdelkader's 1st goal in 23 games, winning 3-2. Frans Nielsen had 2 goals as well.

Holland hopes to ‘maximize assets’

Red Wings GM Ken Holland spoke bluntly with NHL.com's Dan Rosen regarding his decision to trade Brendan Smith...

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said he was in discussions with Smith about a contract extension for the past week.

"I was also very up front that we've traded away a lot of draft picks through the years, we're having a tough year, we're dead last in the [Eastern Conference] and if there was an opportunity at the [NHL Trade Deadline] to make a deal to get the assets we would do it," Holland said. "They were aware of that. That's why the negotiations were dragging out until [Tuesday]. We were making good progress. We were close on the parameters. I talked to the Rangers [on Monday], a couple other teams got in the mix, and obviously pulled the trigger today on the deal that we did."

As well as his take on the team's fate this season:

"We need more picks," Holland said. "We need more opportunities at the draft."

Holland said he's exploring other trades and expects to make one or two more before the deadline at 3 p.m. ET on March 1.

"We've had a tough year," Holland said. "We're dead last, 10 points out. The deadline is [Wednesday]. I've got to try to maximize our assets. I believe we're going to make a move or two more. I think we've got some players here that are of interest to other teams so we'll see what happens."

Rosen continues...

Update: Henrik Zetterberg also said this to NHL.com's Nicholas J. Costonika:

"We understand," Zetterberg said. "It is disappointing. I think everyone is disappointed about that. But we still have 22 games here to play, and we got to improve every day. We still have a lot of talent in this room, and we just have to play hard and see where the chips fall."
