Isles down Penguins 3-2:  Blame it on the tryptophan….

I don’t have the stats in front of me, and frankly I’m too lazy to research it, but if memory serves me correctly the Penguins have not played very well in afternoon games over the past few seasons.

Combine that with a very scrappy performance by the up and coming Islanders, and that was enough for the Isles to squeak out a 3-2 matinee win over the Penguins at Nassau Coliseum.

John Tavares’ tap-in of the rebound of a Freddy Meyer slapper with 6:12 remaining for the game-winner.  Evgeni Malkin and Matt Cooke had the Penguins’ goals.  Backup Pens’ goalie Brent Johnson stopped 34 of the Isles’ 37 shots on goal.

Penguins nip Isles 4-3 in shootout in Tavares debut

It’s safe to say the New York Islanders are happy with John Tavares’ NHL debut tonight against the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

After all, a goal and an assist in your first NHL game is nothing to sneeze at.

But in the end, it was the Penguins who got the last laugh, scoring a late third period goal to tie the game, and eventually winning it on Sidney Crosby’s shootout goal for a final score of 4-3.

Penguins down Isles 6-1;  Playoff opponents narrowing down….

In what must be described as one of the most bland games of the year, the Penguins easily downed the Islanders, 6-1 last night at the Igloo in the 107th consecutive sellout for the Pens.

Evgeni Malkin notched two more assists to pad his scoring lead over Alex Ovechkin to four points with one game remaining for the Art Ross Trophy.  Mathieu Garon got his first start in a while and made what seemed like 130 saves (OK, officially 28).

While the Penguins eventually turned this game into a rout, it was clear that both teams were pretty much going through the motions.  No huge hits, no fights, no elbows, nothing.

Crosby, Whitney out tonight vs. Isles

Turns out that Sidney Crosby’s groin is just a bit too sore to give it a go tonight vs. the Isles.  Crosby’s been ruled out of tonight’s game.

Also, Ryan Whitney will not play as well.  However, it’s not what you think (whether that’s a healthy scratch or a trade).  Whitney is in New England on what the Penguins are calliing “family issues.

New coach, same results:  Pens lose to Isles in SO, 3-2

Well, that’s a little unfair.  After all, the Pens made their coaching change the night before an afternoon game.  Not exactly the best timing to do such a thing.

And so despite the expected resurgence (for at least one game) of the Penguins’ aggressiveness and forechecking, the Pens let another point slip out of their hands, making their quest for a playoff spot that much more difficult.

The Islanders scored twice in the shootout, while Joey MacDonald stopped both Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby to give them the 3-2 win in Dan Bylsma’s debut as Penguins’ head coach.

Sykora, Dupuis nab 1st hat tricks in Penguins 9-2 rout over Isles

Hockey sure is a strange game.

One night after absolutely nothing was going right for the Penguins in a 4-1 loss to the Devils, everything went right in a 9-2 win over the Islanders at the Igloo tonight.

Petr Sykora, after 44 unsuccessful tries, FINALLY got his 1st NHL hat trick, along with Pascal Dupuis, as the Penguins had one of those nights where everything was going in the net early on, then coasted later.

Malkin’s hat trick propels Penguins over Isles, 5-3

Scary.  Sick.  Possessed.

You name the adjective, but it certainly is a sight to see when Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby collectively turn it up a notch.

And that they did, overcoming a 3-1 third period deficit with four goals, including Malkin’s natural hat trick, to defeat the Islanders 5-3 at Nassau Coliseum.

Penguins wake up late, down Islanders in SO, 4-3

Someone keeps forgetting to tell the Penguins that they’re supposed to be playing better against the lesser teams in the league.

Nine days after the Penguins looked horrendous on their recent road trip at Phoenix, it looked like it would be a similar result tonight on Long Island against the Islanders.

However, Tyler Kennedy’s tip of an Alex Goligoski slapper from the right point sailed past Isles’ goalie Joey Macdonald for the tying goal late in the third period, and the Penguins eventually prevailed in the shootout over the Islanders, 4-3.
