According to On Frozen Pond Twitter, the Florida Panthers have traded defenseman Jordan Leopold to the Penguins for a 2010 2nd round draft pick.
UPDATE: Penguins press release after the jump.
It was bound to happen sooner or later. The question is, am I referring simply to a powerplay goal or an Evgeni Malkin powerplay goal ?
Turned out it was both, as Malkin scored on a 4-on-3 powerplay in overtime to give the Penguins a 3-2 win over the visiting Florida Panthers.
The Pens got some much-needed scoring from their wingers as well, with Pascal Dupuis and Ruslan Fedotenko scoring in regulation for the Pens. Steven Reinprecht and Stephen Weiss tallied for the Panthers.
As the clock wound down in the third period, it appeared that this game just wouldn’t be in the cards for the Penguins.
As it turned out, a nice dirty goal off the shoulder of Panthers’ goalie Tomas Vokoun, combined with a Mike Rupp goal after an 88 second extended shift in the Panthers’ zone late in regulation forced the game into overtime. From there, a double minor high-sticking penalty gave the Penguins a 4-on-3 powerplay, where Sidney Crosby banged the rebound of an Evgeni Malkin shot past Vokoun for a 3-2 Penguins win.
Vokoun stopped 42 of the 45 Penguin shots, while Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 19 of 21.
It hasn’t happened often in the Dan Bylsma era, but after today’s 4-2 loss to the Panthers, one thing was evident:
They were tired, and they were outworked.
The Panthers scored goals in the last 20 seconds of both the first and second periods, and Tomas Vokoun stopped 41 shots, giving the Panthers a huge win.
The loss means the Penguins still need one win to clinch a playoff berth.
They shook off that dreaded “1st game home after a road trip” that they were battling for the first two periods, turned up the heat in the third period, and won the game in the shootout.
Evgeni Malkin’s sick juke of Tomas Vokoun as the 3rd shooter for the Penguins grabbed the huge extra point as the Pens won their 7th straight with a 4-3 win over the Panthers.
The Penguins are now all alone in 6th place in the Eastern Conference with 78 points, one point behind 5th place Montreal, who won tonight as well, and remain four points behind 4th place Philadelphia, who also won.
IHCDB is now 9-1-1 since taking over from FHCMT.
The Florida Panthers are not a fluke. That is one talented young team.
The Panthers held their own with the Penguins for two periods. But in the end, the Pens pulled away with three third period goals for a 4-1 win over the Panthers and a huge four-point swing in the Eastern Conference Standings.
The Pens are now in a 3-way tie with the Panthers and New York Rangers for 6th in the East with 74 points. Both teams have a game in hand over the Penguins, however the Pens have one more win than either team.
Penguins’ captain Sidney Crosby will return from a four-game absence tonight vs. the Florida Panthers.
Crosby centered the first line on the game-day skate, with new Penguins Chris Kunitz and Bill Guerin on the wings.
However, defenseman Sergei Gonchar will be out. Gonchar’s wife is due with their child. Alex Goligoski has been recalled.
Well, this had better be rock bottom, for the Penguins’ sake.
The Penguins losing streak hit four games and frustration has started to boil over today in a 6-1 pasting by the Florida Panthers in yet another afternoon matinee.
The “highlight”, if you want to call it that, was the second “fight”, if you want to call it that, for Sidney Crosby. Crosby got in a second period tussle with Brent McLean at 17:01, immediately after Max Talbot and Gregory Campbell duked it out at 16:59. While McLean was assessed the typical 5 minutes for fighting, Crosby was assessed 5 for fighting, 2 for instigating, 2 for unsportsmanlike conduct, and a 10 minute misconduct. It appeared that Crosby pulled the jersey over McLean’s head, I imagine that’s what caused the extra penalties, not sure.
