Niemi, Blackhawks nip Penguins in OT, 2-1

Well, they got a point out of it.
In a quite frustrating but highly entertaining game between two teams that you’d think are division rivals, the Blackhawks got an overtime goal by Kris Versteeg to defeat the Penguins, 2-1.
Blackhawks’ backup goalie Antti Niemi got the start, and he didn’t disappoint, making several point-blank saves, as the Pens were fortunate to get a point of the game, coming after Jordan Staal’s goal with only 1:32 left in regulation.
It was the Pens’ first overtime/shootout loss of the season.

Malkin’s OT blast gives Penguins 5-4 win over Blackhawks

Two points are two points. Doesn’t really matter how you got them, the important thing is that the Penguins got them tonight.
The Penguins gave up two separate two-goal leads, as well as withstanding a third period barrage of 20 shots by the young Blackhawks. In the end, the Pens took advantage of a fortunate tripping call late in regulation play that eventually led to an overtime goal by Evgeni Malkin to give the Pens another huge 5-4 win.
The Pens are now only one point behind both Buffalo and Carolina for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

Chris Kunitz will have to wait at least one more game before he’s potentially paired with Sidney Crosby. Crosby will remain out of the lineup for the Penguins tonight in Chicago vs. the Blackhawks.
Also, Chris Minard was placed on waivers after the Whitney trade, and cleared. In addition, Tim Wallace was re-called, while Janne Pesonen was demoted back down to W-B/S.
