Sunday Penguins Notes:  Hypocrite = Mr. “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Hockey”

Just some quick blurbs as we await the Sunday afternoon matinée between the Penguins and Blackhawks:

- As the Toronto Star’s Damien Cox accurately pointed out this morning, Don Cherry’s proclaiming of Mario Lemieux as a hypocrite is a bit, well, hypocritical.  This coming from a guy that has created 22 videos called “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Hockey”, no doubt earning him hundreds of thousands of dollars, probably more.

And by the way, as the Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Empty Netters’ Seth Rorabaugh mentioned this morning, let’s not overlook the decades-long bias against French-Canadian hockey players (as well as European) Cherry has become infamous for.  Don’t think that has nothing to do with it.

Other stuff:

- This small statement as Matt Cooke returns to action in Chicago today following his four-game suspension:  If/when the day comes the Penguins ever release Cooke, the line for his suitors would be around the block, and yes, it includes your favorite team.

- In all seriousness though, I’m going to be interesting to see how Cooke plays for the remainder of this year, and going forward.

- A full eight Penguins are currently on Injured Reserve.

- Forgive me for not towing the company line that Tyler Kennedy is all of a sudden “back”.  Yes of course, it’s nice to see TK generating some offense finally, with five goals in his last eight games.  But he’s also shown that he can just as quickly not score in his next 20.

- Speaking of not scoring, if it were not for an empty netter against the Islanders on Feb. 2nd, Max Talbot would be scoreless in his last 33 games.

- A few milestones on the horizon, courtesy of the Penguins’ press notes for the game today:  Zbynek Michalek is 2 assists away from 100, Kris Letang is 5 assists from 100 and Cooke is 6 points from 300 and 8 games from 800 in his career.

- It wasn’t too long ago that there might have been one Penguin that was a minus player.  Well now, with a rash of injuries and AHL callups, there are 12, led by Michalek with a team-low -8.

- A lot is being made about the Penguins last matchup vs. the Islanders after the fiasco, which is Apr. 8th on Long Island.  My buddies at The Pensblog are spearheading things for a road trip.  While that should be fun, it needs to be remembered that the game vs. the Isles is the next to last game of the year, and most likely will have playoff match-up repercussions.

Cherry’s Hatred of Mario goes Way Back Tony !! He is in my mind irrelevant, Most knowledgeable hockey fan’s Know he is a Senile Sideshow just like Stan Fishcler again who has Hated Mario from Way Back.

Max Talbot is what he has always been until the Bandwagon 12 year old Fans & the 12 year Old Minded Fans made him into a God for scoring 2 Goals against the Wings in game 7 Of the SC to win it for the Pens, Vitale can take his Place for Less the Half the Price ! Trade him to the west & be done with him.

By the way Where are all the Talbot can be Geno’s winger fans at Now? rolleyes

Yes grapes has sold a lot of rock-em-sock-em videos, but how does this make Don a hypocrite? Don has always worn his heart on his sleeve and always embraced the rough tough brand of hockey. Please site a reference where Don EVER complained about the NHL being too tough or violent.

You can choose to dislike Don for his views or opinions ( like maybe calling out your beloved mario), but a hypocrite he is not.

Unlike some NHL Co-Owners we all know.  wink

EP, it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility for Talbot to be Malkin’s winger with the way he played during the playoffs.  The injuries he had screwed him out of any momentum he could have taken from that.  I agree with your premise though that trading him wouldn’t be a bad thing.  Unless he stays at his current salary, there are more than enough people that can take his place at a lesser price.

You being serious?  Don Cherry is a big proponent of getting rid of all hits to the head.  Here’s a link to one of the clips of his videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJROeBglScw
7 seconds in is a hit to the head.  At 20 seconds in, there’s a knee to knee similar to the Cooke/AO hit, only this one is more blatant.  After that is another hit to the head, but it’s OK because Don Cherry is not a hypocrite.

pens fan in baltimore  At his current salary ?? cheese He is making over a Mill this year & hasn’t scored a goal with a Goalie in the Net since November! November, Vitale can do what he does for Half the Price ! & I understand that Max will go down in Penguins History & Pittsburgh Sports History for His 2 goals in game 7 against the Wings, But it’s time to turn the Page on Max & he was never a 2nd Line Winger

A million for a guy who is an effective PKer and at the best of times can bounce between the 2nd and 3rd lines isn’t too bad.  There’s other options for sure, but he’s not going to take a paycut.  If he gets more than what he does now, even a little, I don’t see the Pens keeping him.

How the hell does that make Cherry a hypocrite?

I’m no fan of the xenophobic old man, but your comment makes no sense. Cherry sells fight tapes. Cherry likes old-time hockey. So?

I’d say it’s pretty hypocritical to complain about players making the same hits in videos you have sold.  Maybe there’s another meaning of hypocrite I am missing???

Right. On. The. Money.

Too logical, though, so no one ‘round these parts will get it.

Especially those who say Mario Lemieux is a “terrible” owner.

There’s a difference between a good hockey hit and a hit to the head.

To me, the undeniable worst bit of Cherry hypocrisy was when he criticized Andrew Ference for doing exactly the same thing he apparently now thinks Lemieux should do:  criticize his own players/teammates.

Cherry ripped Ference as a bad teammate for his common-sense comments about Dan Paille, stating that it was wrong to criticize one of your own “even if he was an axe murderer.”

Now Cherry is ripping Lemieux because he HASN’T criticized one of his own.  That is the height of hypocrisy, right there, folks.

It is hard to believe this numbskull gets this forum, without challenge, every Saturday night, to spew this kind of nonsense while Ron McLean sits there like a potted plant.  I can’t believe the fine country of Canada hasn’t moved past this guy yet.

Yes.  Usually, the difference in Cherry’s eyes is who makes the hit.  That’s the only difference in the videos and the hits he complains about.
