Penguins hit the ice on Day One of camp

Pics and bullets courtesy of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Empty Netters’ Seth Rorabaugh:

-It looks like Tyler Kennedy is getting some serious consideration to replace Maxime Talbot on the second line. He was skating with Evgeni Malkin and Ruslan Fedotenko much of the session.

-We already have a jersey foul. Fedotenko’s name on his jersey was spelled “FedEtenko.”

-Craig Adams was on a line with Mike Rupp and Eric Godard. We’d like to see who would a race between those three if you made Adams wear his skates on the wrong feet.

-The second session has started with Pascal Dupuis on a line with Jordan Staal and Matt Cooke.

A surprise visit for a longtime Penguins fan

From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Shelly Anderson:

Two years ago, Penguins star center Sidney Crosby delivered season tickets to Kilgore as part of a team campaign to get the players out into the community, and she startled him some by telling him the team was not ready to win the Cup that year, but perhaps the next year.

After Kilgore’s prediction came true—the Penguins advanced to the Stanley Cup final last year and won the title this year—Crosby surprised her today with a return visit. This time, he had not only her season tickets but also the Cup.

“You were right, eh?” Crosby said to her.

Preseason Penguins Roundtable:  Part II - the Defense

Dallas Stars vs St. Louis Blues

Now that we’ve looked at the offense in our preseason Penguins roundtable, we’ll now focus on the defense in Part II.  I apologize in advance, as these series of questions are relatively weak, there’s only so many questions about the defense you can ask.

Next week we’ll look at Special Teams in Part III, and Part IV will focus on Defending the Cup.

Once again, here’s who will be participating;

Stanley Cup Finals - Detroit Red Wings v Pittsburgh Penguins - Game Six

Hockey is almost upon us once again, friends.  The Olympic camps are up and running and players are continuing their offseason workouts as NHL camps creep closer to opening themselves.

The NHL blogosphere is ramping up as well.  Twitter has allowed the smack talk to continue non-stop basically all summer, especially between the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins and the runner-ups, the Detroit Red Wings.

Anyway, we’re doing a four-part preseason roundtable discussion leading up to the opening of Penguins training camp on Sept. 12th.  This will be Part I - Offense.  Part II will be Defense, Part III will be Special Teams and Part IV will be Defending the Cup.

Crosby enjoys being one of Canada’s guys

From NHL.com’s Dan Rosen;

Sidney Crosby got a little taste of what it’s like to be a 22-year-old first-timer at an Olympic orientation camp Thursday night.

First, Martin Brodeur stoned the Pittsburgh Penguins’ captain, who is about as close to a lock to make the Canadian Olympic squad as Brodeur, with a brilliant glove save on a shot targeted for the upper left-hand corner of the net less than six minutes into the game.

“He baited me pretty good there,” Crosby said. “He showed me all glove and he knew it was going there, so he made a good save. He forced me to go there.”
