And here I thought July 1st might be sorta anti-climatic for Penguins fans.
Sorry for the lack of opinion-based posts over the summer. Between work and being on the road every weekend for my son’s baseball tournaments at various colleges, it’s been hectic to say the least. Was supposed to be on the road again this weekend at the University of Virginia, but we cancelled out of that, so all of a sudden, I was free for July 1st!
And as it turned out, July 1, 2011 for Penguins fans turned into a bizarre, incredulous day.

Report: Penguins Re-Sign Dupuis to 2-Year/$3M Contract

Dupuis has agreed to a two-year contract to remain with the Penguins, sources told the Tribune-Review. The deal, which will be announced this afternoon, is worth $3 million total — meaning Dupuis will count $1.5 million against the salary cap each of the next two seasons.
Dupuis, 32, counted $1.4 million against the cap each of the previous three seasons. Over that span, he produced 47 goals over that span — including 35 the last two years, missing only two games over that period.
With Dupuis getting only a slight raise, the Penguins are committed to approximately $57 million toward NHL contracts for next season, when the salary cap will be $64.3 million.

Penguins Sign Defenseman Corey Potter

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Corey Potter to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The deal is for the 2010-11 season and is a two-way contract that will pay Potter $500,000 at the NHL level.
Potter, 26, has played in eight career NHL games with the New York Rangers, recording two points (1G-1A).
Potter, who was drafted by the Rangers in the fourth round (122nd overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, has played the majority of his career with New York’s top-minor league affiliate, the Hartford Wolfpack of the American Hockey League.

Penguins re-sign Forward Chris Conner

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed forward Chris Conner to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The deal is for the 2010-11 season and is a two-way contract that will pay Conner $550,000 at the NHL level.
Conner, 26, has played in 79 career NHL games since entering the league in 2006, posting nine goals and 24 points.

Penguins sign defenseman Andrew Hutchinson to one-year deal

The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with defenseman Andrew Hutchinson, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The deal is for the 2010-11 season and is a two-way contract that will pay Hutchinson $500,000 at the NHL level.
Hutchinson, 30, has played in 135 NHL games in his career during stops in Dallas, Tampa Bay, Carolina and Nashville. He has recorded 38 points on 12 goals and 26 assists.

Penguins Sign Winger Brett Sterling

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed left wing Brett Sterling to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The deal is for the 2010-11 season and is a two-way contract that will pay Sterling $500,000 at the NHL level.
Sterling, 26, has played in 19 NHL games with the Atlanta Thrashers, recording two goals and four points.Sterling, who was originally drafted by Atlanta in the fifth round (145th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, has played the majority of his career with Atlanta’s top-minor league affiliate, the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League. In four seasons with Chicago, Sterling scored 144 goals, 119 assists and 263 points in 254 games. He chipped in 14 goals and 30 points in 40 playoff contests for the Wolves.

Penguins sign forward Ryan Craig

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Ryan Craig to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The deal is for the 2010-11 season and is a two-way contract that will pay Craig $500,000 at the NHL level.
Craig, 28, has played the last five seasons with the Tampa Bay organization after the Lightning selected him in the eighth round (255th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. In 184 career games, Craig has totaled 32 goals, 31 assists and 63 points. He’s also appeared in 11 postseason contests with Tampa Bay.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Paul Martin to a five-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The contract runs through the 2014-15 season, and has an average annual value of $5 million dollars over the term of the contract.
Martin, 29, played six seasons with New Jersey after the Devils selected him in the second round (62nd overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Martin has 26 goals, 137 assists, 163 points and a plus-55 rating in 400 career games, and 16 points (2G-14A) in 42 postseason contests.

Penguins Sign Defenseman Zbynek Michalek to Five-Year Contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Zbynek Michalek (z’BIGH-nehk mih-KHAL-ihk) to a five-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The contract runs through the 2014-15 season, and has an average annual value of $4 million dollars over the term of the contract.
Michalek, 27, has played six NHL seasons, the last five with the Phoenix Coyotes, totaling 27 goals, 88 assists and 115 points in 415 games. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound blueliner led the NHL in blocked shots in 2008-09 with 271.

Penguins Re-Sign D Ben Lovejoy to Three-Year Contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Ben Lovejoy to a three-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The new contract goes into effect at the start of the 2010-11 season and will run through 2012-13. The deal is a two-way contract for the 2010-11 campaign, and will pay Lovejoy $525,000 at the NHL level. He will earn $525,000 in 2011-12 and $525,000 in 2012-13.
Lovejoy, 26, appeared in 12 games with Pittsburgh last season, compiling three assists and an impressive plus-8 rating. He recorded his first NHL point with an assist Nov. 14, 2009 at Boston. Lovejoy, who made his NHL debut in the 2008-09 campaign after seeing action in two games with Pittsburgh, finished with a plus or even rating in 11 of his 12 contests this past season.
