Refreshed Penguins, Fleury triumph over Thrashers, 6-3

Well, obviously, the Penguins needed that four day break after a sluggish 6-3 loss in Philadelphia last Saturday vs. the Flyers.

That, and playing their first game after the break against the Atlanta Thrashers didn’t hurt either.

The Pens headed down to Hotlanta tonight, got their #1 goalie back, and played a pretty decent game in topping the Thrashers 6-3.

Evgeni Malkin had 2 goals and 4 points, while Marc-Andre Fleury had a solid return in goal for the Penguins, holding off significant pressure from the Thrashers in both the 1st and 3rd periods.

Another poor afternoon effort dooms Penguins, lose to Flyers, 6-3

The Penguins have played 30 games now this season, and the NHL has already scheduled them for three Saturday afternoon matinees.

And in each one, they’ve looked pathetic.

This afternoon the Penguins ventured into Philadelphia, where the Flyers were easily the more physical and hustling team in a 6-3 pounding over the Penguins.

Minard, Curry re-assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

From the Penguins:

“The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-assigned goaltender John Curry and forward Chris Minard to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL), it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.”  Also, defenseman Ben Lovejoy was re-assigned on Thursday.

———————————————————

This is an indication that Marc-Andre Fleury is ready to go after his undisclosed, but believed to be groin-related, injury.  Also, hopefully Minard’s re-assignment means that Mike Zigomanis is ready to come back, the Penguins’ faceoff percentage could use it.

Sykora, Dupuis nab 1st hat tricks in Penguins 9-2 rout over Isles

Hockey sure is a strange game.

One night after absolutely nothing was going right for the Penguins in a 4-1 loss to the Devils, everything went right in a 9-2 win over the Islanders at the Igloo tonight.

Petr Sykora, after 44 unsuccessful tries, FINALLY got his 1st NHL hat trick, along with Pascal Dupuis, as the Penguins had one of those nights where everything was going in the net early on, then coasted later.

It was eight years ago today…..

I was still on active duty in the Navy in December 2000 (I retired in 2003).  I happened to be on temporary duty at a conference in Fort Huachuca, Arizona of all places on December 11th, 2000.  I had gone down to the cafeteria on our lunch break, had sat down with my plate of cholesterol and believe that I was watching either Sportscenter or CNN Headline News, something like that.

And then I heard something that absolutely stunned me, in a wonderful kind of way.  Le Magnifique, Mario Lemieux, was coming back, out of his 3 1/2 year retirement.  My co-workers, I’m sure none of them hockey fans, gave me a kinda “what the hell ??” look towards me as I spouted “Oh My God !!” and a couple “Holy Shit’s !!” out.  I’m getting goosebumps just typing it right now.

Now, I should mention that even though I was a Penguins fan and a hockey fan in general, I wasn’t the fanatic that I am now (I attribute a lot of that to the frickin’ Pirates, but that’s for another day).  In addition, I was overseas for many of Lemieux’s years with the Penguins, being WAY back before the days of easily accessible satellite TV.  I was stationed in the Pentagon during the Pens’ cup years.  So because of all that, I always felt I missed out on so much as a Penguins fan.
