Back on March 6, I wrote a blog called “Goalie Of The Future?” . It was in reference to the Rockford Ice Hogs (AHL affiliate) goaltender Carter Hutton. A couple of games ago—March 16th, against Dallas, Hutton was brought up as the back up to Crawford. Ray Emery was listed as “under the weather”.
I didn’t buy it then (refer to that recap) and I don’t buy it now. I believe it was a “here’s what the big leagues are like” walk through for the kid. Coach Q has NEVER been afraid to try kids (Shaw, Smith, Morin, Hayes, Pirri, Saad, etc). He also has never shied away from switching goalies (Huet / Niemi, Turco / Crawford, etc.) I would not be surprised to see this kid between the pipes soon. Neither Crawford or Emery has shown the want or ability to take over the # 1 spot. Hutton is 21 - 10 - 3, with a .919 save percentage as an Ice Hog. Since signing hie 1 year deal with the Hawks, he has been 11 - 2 - 1 in his last 15 AHL games. He was the AHL Player of the Week back on March 4th, and signed the contract with Chicago a couple of days later.
Give the kid a shot, I say. See what he does. I can’t cross my fingers and hope that Crow or Razor gets hot in the playoffs. Plus what a great story it would be if this kid comes from out of no where to give the Hawks their first shutout of the year. (You heard it here first, ha ha!!)
I’ve been following the reports of this kid since he joined the Ice Hogs. It’s funny how Alexander Salak has gone from originally being slated as Crawford’s back up with the Hawks, to Hutton’s back up in Rockford. Here’s the story from chicagoblackhawks.com;
The American Hockey League announced on Monday that Rockford IceHogs goaltender Carter Hutton has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for Week 23 and the period ending Mar. 4, 2012.
Hutton was in goal for all three games for Rockford in Week 23, helping the team pick up five of six standings points (2-0-0-1) while helping pull the club back into the Western Conference Calder Cup playoff race. Overall in the three game week, Hutton turned in a .963 save percentage and a 1.30 goals-against average.
The Thunder Bay, Ont. native opened the week by making 35 saves in Rockford’s 3-2 seven-round shootout loss to Abbotsford on Feb. 29. Facing a pair of critical road tests over the weekend, Hutton then stopped 44 of 45 shots in a big 3-1 victory at Milwaukee on Mar. 2, and registered 24 saves as the IceHogs rallied for a 2-1 win in Peoria on Mar. 3.
Hutton also won the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for Week 17, becoming the first IceHogs player to win the award twice in one season. Since Jan. 8, Hutton is 12-4-0-2 with a 2.01 GAA and a .928 SV%.
A second-year pro, Hutton has played 29 games for Rockford this season, posting a 15-8-3 record with a 2.50 goals-against average, a .916 save percentage and two shutouts. The 26-year-old made his pro debut with Adirondack (AHL) after completing his senior season at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell in 2009-10, and spent his rookie campaign with Worcester last year. Hutton, who shows a career mark of 27-17-6 with four shutouts in 55 AHL appearances, signed as a free agent with the Chicago Blackhawks on Feb. 23, 2012.
In recognition of his achievement, Hutton will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming IceHogs home game.
