Talk'n Hawks

Stat Chat

Since we’re a little more than a quarter of the way through the season, I thought it might be fun to review some of this years statistics. I have looked up (on both chicagoblackhawks.com and nhl.com) individual as well as team numbers. If any of the Hawks individual stats are in the top 10 of the NHL, that will also be noted. Let’s start with the team first.

Power Play
The Hawks are dead center in the league (15) with a 17% effectiveness. This number has slowly been rising, week to week. They hovered around 8-9% the first month or so of the season. I still think they play down too low -behind the net and goal line corner- rather than moving the goalie from post to post up near the blue line.

Penalty Kill
This was real easy to look up. I started at the bottom and found them right away. 73%, dead last. The Hawks unlike the P.P. were actually on top the league at the beginning of the season, right around 92%. After the 5 of 6 P.P. performance by Vancouver a few weeks back, it all went down hill.

Goals For /  Goals Against
The Hawks are 3rd in the league, 3.2 per game in goals for. They are 20th in goals against with an even 3. Those last few road games killed this stat. The Hawks should chip away at that. I would like to be posting something closer to 2.5 next time I do this.

Wins
The Hawks are in a four way tie in the league with 14 wins.

Now, for some individual player stats;

Goals— 1) Toews (overall 4th in the league) 13,  Sharp—10.  Hossa—9
Assists- 1) Kane (overall 10th) 16,  Hossa—14,  Keith—13
Points— 1) Toews (overall 6th)  25, Hossa and Kane are both tied with 23
Game winning Goals—- Toews 4, Stalberg 2, and many tied with 1
Face offs won—Toews leads all of hockey with 62%
+/-  Sharp-11,  Hossa-10,  Toews & Kane—9 each

There you go. Not really any surprises. The guys you are paying, are the guys who are coming through.

Except for Huet who makes $5.5 mil. to play in the Alps, and Olescz who makes $3.5 mil. to play for the Ice Hogs.
