It was part 2 of the Father’s Florida road trip (see previous blog entry for part 1). The Hawks (8-2-2) went up the state to Tampa Bay (5-2-2) after last nigh’ts shoot out victory against the Panthers.
Ray Emery (2-0) started tonight against Dwayne Roloson (2-3-1). Would you believe you’d have to go all the way back to 1978 to find the last time a Hawks goalie started a season 3-0? The Hawks used the same lines and defense men as they did the night before. Duncan Keith (upper body - day to day) sat out another game.
The first period started with a very fast pace for the first 6 minutes of play. The Hawks out shot T.B. 4-0 during that stretch. Nine minutes into the period, the Hawks once again, showed why they have a 29th place, 8.7% Power Play, by coming up empty. The Hawks were 0-19 during the previous 5 games. Shortly after the failed opportunity, Emery came up with a BIG save on an open Stamkos, who went forehand, backhand. Toews caught a puck in the face and left the ice (and the bench) for the rest of the period. Viktor Stalberg put one off the post on a 2 on 1 breakaway pass from Dave Bolland. The Hawks out shot the Lightning 15-8 in the period. No score.
In the second period, just 15seconds in, Stamkos scored on a rebound to put T.B. up 1-0. The Hawks then, on their 2nd Power Play, finally scored. Patrick Sharp got the goal on a nice pass from Toews. Minutes later, Tampa Bay scored on a weird play with players in the crease and Connolly half into the net. It was reviewed (how many times have we seen that this season already) and the call on the ice was right, good goal, 2-1 T.B.. 3 goals in the first 5 minutes…. but wait. Only a minute and a half later, Hossa from Kane to tie it at 2-2. Then, Carcillo poke checks the puck away and scores back hand on a breakaway to make it 3-2. A mere 12 seconds later, Kane to Sharp, to go up 4-2. That now makes it 6 goals in 7 minutes!! Stamkos, in front of the net again, closed it to 4-3 with 8 minutes left. On a Tampa Bay Power Play with 1 minute left, it was Stamkos again, for the Hat Trick on a cross ice one timer. (This is the play I’ve been BEGGING for the Hawks to use on their P.P.) The wild period ended at 4-4.
In the third period, over 8 minutes went by before I even put something down on my note pad. The Hawks missed a couple of opportunities, and Emery had a couple of good saves, but that was about it for the uneventful 3rd. On to yet another overtime.
In the O.T. Tampa Bay came out strong early, but came up short but with less than 1 minute to go, a wide open LaCavalier, beat Emery, who had no chance. Hey, 3 out of 4 points on a road trip. I’ll take it.
