Q’s 1100th is a W

It was the 1100th game behind the bench for Coach Q and he & the Hawks were victorious. After getting trounced by the Vancouver Canucks at the United Center 10 days ago, 6-3, the Hawks returned the favor by beating Vancouver at their arena 5-1. This was the first game of the annual circus trip. (I can’t believe that the circus still does a good business during these times, but that’s another story) The Hawks and Canucks lead the West in goals scored, so big totals by either team should not have been a surprise. It was a battle of the Corey’s, with Crawford against Schneider, between the pipes.

With the absence of Seabrook (lower body) the defense looked like this. Keith and Leddy—great, Hjalmarsson and Montador—very good, and Lepisto and Scott—YIKES!!!. Dave Bolland returned for the game after missing the last couple of starts. The lines on offense were pretty much the same to start, but as we all know, when Coach Q sees something he doesn’t like on a march up, things change in a hurry.

The first five minutes of the first period was all Vancouver, but nothing went in. Both goal tenders played great for the period. The shots on goal were in favor of the Hawks, 8-7. With both goalies coming up with big saves, it seemed like there were a lot more shots than that. The game was scoreless after one.

In the second period, just 38 seconds in, Hansen put one in on Crawford off a great pass. Cro had no chance on this one. It was all Vancouver AGAIN to start the period, and if not for more big saves, it would not have stayed 1-0. The Hawks went on a Power Play (slowly creeping up to 13%). It was Montador to Kruger to Brunette, pass, pass, shot, for the goal 1-1. The rest of the period the puck was more like a SuperBall (Google this if you’re under 40) with both teams having a hard time retaining possession. Later, on the Hawks 2nd P.P., Kane scored seconds into it. The Hawks managed to stay out of the penalty box for the rest of the period. Good thing too, with 42% of the Canucks offense coming with the man advantage.

In the 3rd period the Hawks found the back of the net 3 times with Toews, Carcillo, and Montador. 5-1 final. Hossa continued to be hot with 3 assists in the game and showing great hustle on the Toews goal.

Hey, so what is the deal with O’Donnell?  Injured or G’s doghouse ?  He doesn’t seem the kind of player to get himself benched by the coach for an infraction.  While I like having John Scott as a “presence” when necessary, His defense scares me at times and we are much better off with the experience of O’Donnell out there in his place.

And….. only two things could have made this win better: Watching Lu-long-overrated have another melt down between the pipes and John Scott grabbbing Burrows by the hair for the beat down.

I think that the Hawks only dress Scott when they feel like there will be an edge to the game. Things get dirty when we play the blues so he dressed there, things get heated with the nucks so they dressed him again. The difference in his play has been noticeably better this year, but that still doesnt mean he his good.

O’Donnell has had some iffy plays, so he might be scratched because of some of his decision making, though right now, we could scratch half the d-men for questionable decisions that lead to odd man rushes. The biggest reasons it sucks to dress Scott are that no one is dumb enough to fight him anymore and this usually means Keith plays 30 mins that night…

Scott is a real like-able guy though, he gives a great interview and seems to be a positive influence in the locker room, I just wish he could skate faster….
