I got home a little after 1:00 am from work and went straight to the DVR. (Everyone, by now, that I work with knows not to say a word on the outcome of my DVR’d Hawks games). I planned on watching the 1st period only, and then watching the rest when I woke up today. Yeah, right, who was I kidding. I stayed up and watched the whole game.
The Hawks and Wings met for the 715th time (the most of any 2 NHL teams) with the game being played at the United Center. There were many line changes for Coach Q, as follows. Line 1) Carcillo, Toews, Hossa. 2) Sharp, Kane, Stalberg 3) Bickell, Bolland, Frolik 4) Brunette, Mayers, Hayes. Yes, that’s right, it was the NHL debut for “Big” Jimmy Hayes (6 foot 6 ins). We say the American born youngster all through the pre season. He has been down in Rockford and got his first call up last night. What a thrill it must of been for him, to early on, get into a collision with “for sure” 1st ballot HOF, Lidstrom! Jiimy Howard (22-8-1) was in net against Crawford (14-8-2) Also as a side note, it looks more and more like Montador and O’Donnel appear to be the 3rd defensive tandem. Both Scott and Lepisto have been in the 3 spot as well this season.
The 1st period literally flew by with only a couple of whistles in the first 8 minutes. Carcillo, back in action for the first time in 6 games, dropped the gloves with Bertuzzi. This followed a clean shoulder hit that happened a few moments earlier. It was mostly a dance routine, that got stopped by the officials. Abdelkader made it 1-0 for Detroit, around 10 minutes in. Toews then tied it on a Penalty Shot (remember the old days when these were VERY rare) 1-1. The Hawks had a good Penalty Kill (still 78% -27th) and then ended the period with a carry over Power Play. It was 10-7 shots on goal, Hawks.
In the second, the carry over Power Play yielded nothing. This is, as you will see later, getting to be a problem. Al tough, give them credit, the Red Wings didn’t give the Hawks much to work with. Chicago had periods of pressure from time to time but Howard came up big. Detroit went up 2-1 on a shot that went off of Bertuzzi in front of the net. Hossa, on a “one man puck cycle” went from down low, up the boards, across the ice, and back down the other side to score 2-2 game. Crawford had a couple of big glove saves in the period also. For the rest of the game, the two teams played ‘who can hit the posts the most’.
Seabrook had the game winner with a rocket one timer around 2 minutes in. 3 unsuccessful Power Plays were turned in by the boys, but again some HUGE saves from Howard mixed in there. The entire game was fun to watch and went by quickly. As always, a great game whenever these to teams meet! The 2 teams will play again in a week.
Have a safe & Happy New Year everyone!!
