Hawks Edge Leafs

Normally, when your team scores an empty net goal, the scoring and game is over, The Hawks can’t even get that right, more on this later….

The Hawks beat the Maple Leafs 5 - 4 at the United Center last night. Chicago has, believe it or not, the 4th most points from home games this season. It was Crawford STARTING in net (22-16-5) against “The Monster” Gustavsson (16-12-2). The Leafs, by the way are the second youngest team in the league.

Johnny Oduya (#27) made his debut with the Hawks last night, He was traded from the Jets for 2 draft picks in 2013. The other move by the Hawks at trade deadline was John Scott to the Rangers for a 2012 draft pick. If anyone is curious why that wasn’t the subject of a blog, what can you say. Those two sentences are the extent of it. It was also Ice Hogs in Chicago night, with 4 Rockford players in the lineup. Shaw, Olsen, Hayes & Bollig.  Brandon Bolling was brought up for the first time this year and wore # 52. Morrison (a wasted trade) and Frolik, were the scratches.

The lines were 1) Brunette, Kane (center), Hossa.  2) Sharp, Kruger, Stalberg.  3) Bickell, Bolland, Shaw. 4) Bollig, Mayers, Hayes. D-wise; Keith /  Leddy, Seabrook / Oduya, Lepisto / Olsen. It will be interesting to see who goes when Hjalmarsson comes back.

The game started off with an easy wrap around, stuff goal by Toronto 59 seconds in. The Hawks, who were wearing their white. road jerseys (?) gave up the puck behind their net. ! - 0. A Power Play (1 for the last 40) yielded nothing, Then Shaw, battled in the corner & took the puck to the net, 1 - 1. 28 seconds later, during an immediate Penalty Kill the score became 2 - 1 on a redirect. Then, the Leafs made it 3 - 1 on a wrist shot by MacArthur. Things were looking pretty grim, to say the least. For once, then, with 29 seconds left, the Hawks scored. Kruger redirected a Leddy blast. 3 - 2 going into the locker room. Hawks out shot 11 - 10.

The second period saw Emery in the net to start. There was a successful Penalty kill after a Shaw, goaltender interference call. Then, with a CLUSTER of players in front of the net,a Kane backhander tied it 3 - 3. Bollig got into his 1st NHL fight, in his first NHL game with Schenn. Hossa put the Hawks up 4 - 3 on a wrist shot. Hawks again out shot the Leafs 12 - 7.

Emery had some nice saves in the 3rd period. However, the Hawks did what really bothers me, when they have the lead. They took only their 2nd shot on goal 10 minutes into the period. A PK and a PP yielded nothing in the frame. A sitckless Lepisto made a great kick save on a open part of the net. Hossa scored and empty net goal with 15 seconds left, to end the scoring…. BUT NO!! The Leafs score a goal with 3.2 seconds left off a redirect. Seriously guys, you couldn’t finish it with 15 seconds left?  5 - 4 Final.
