The Blackhawks have now picked up at least a point in 7 straight games after beating the Ducks in a shoot out last night. Corey Crawford was one shoot out save better than Jonas Hiller to put the Hawks in first place in the Central. Patrick Kane, who didn’t have a point in the last 3 games, had 2 assists and the shoot out winning goal.
Coach Q used the same line up and lines again (a record for him I can assume) to start the game, that he has used for the last several games. Nick Leddy (who I admit, I wasn’t much of a fan of last year) has really improved. Paired up with Keith, he has learned to use him body and stick very effectively this season. The Ducks, coached by Randy Carlyle - and his new 3 year deal- went on the power play first in the game. The Hawks, with their 2nd league best, 94.1% penalty kill, fought them off. There was no score after the first period. The Hawks out shot Anaheim 11 - 5.
Early in the second, while on a power play that started with seconds left in the 1st, Getzlaf scored to put the Ducks up 1 - 0. The Hawks later tied it on a great spin-o-rama pass from Kane to Hossa in front of the net. Hoss has now scored a goal in 5 straight games. A costly turnover led to the Ducks leading 2 - 1. It was career goal # 640 for the ageless Selanne. That was how the second period would end.
At the 14:03 minute mark in the third, the Hawks tied the game 2 - 2. Patrick Sharp went high on Hiller from the deep slot. The Hawks, then fought off a couple more power plays to allow the game to go into overtime.
In the extra frame it was all Hawks. The boys did everything right except put the puck into the net .Hossa hit the post twice during the 5 minutes, The second time was after Toews won a face off in the Ducks zone with just 2.4 seconds left.
After Anaheim failed to score while shooting first, the Hawks Captain led off the shoot out scoring, with a nice move on Hiller. Selanne tied it and Bolland missed in the next round. Crawford stopped Getzlaf this time and it was all up to Kane Kaner scored and the Hawks picked up another 2 points at home.
The next game is an early 6:00 pm Central start at Carolina on Friday. On Saturday they play at Columbus. We’ll probably see Emery for the second time this year in one of those games, I’m guessing.
