Four Disallowed Goals!

I cannot remember when, if ever, I watched a game where the puck went into the net and was disallowed four different times. This weirdness occurred when the 1-8-1 (in their last 10 games) Blue Jackets came to the United Center last night.  Three times for the Hawks, a kick and 2 high sticks, and once for Columbus, another kick, the second time the phrase was heard in the game.  From what I saw on the replays, I’d have to say they got it right every time. All calls were made on the ice prior to review.  Enough of this, on to the ones that counted.

Ray Emery (sporting his new Hawks mask - no boxers, btw) got his 2nd start this season.  On the other side, 22 year old Allen York, brought his 3 minutes worth of NHL experience to the crease for his first start ever. Daniel Carcillo was out, and will be for another game, serving a 2 game suspension for a hit (on which a penalty was NOT called) in the previous game.  The lines were put together in his absence like this; Stalberg, Toews, Brunette. Sharp, Kane, Hossa. Bickell, Bolland, Frolik. Scott, Kruger, Mayers. Sam Lepisto teamed up with Montador on defense for this game.

In the first period, Marcus Kruger recorded his 1st NHL goal. He put in a rebound off of a Jamal Mayers shot to start the scoring. Columbus answered by going high, glove side on Emery, tying it at 1-1.  The Hawks then went on the penalty kill (Hawks 3rd in the league going into the game at 93%) and stopped the Blue Jackets.  Later on in the period, the Hawks went on the power play (you don’t want to know those sad numbers) for less than a minute.  A 4 on 4 ensued when Chicago drew a penalty, half a minute later.  After the Columbus penalty expired, while short handed, Bolland scored (sounds familiar) to put the hawks ahead 2-1.

In the second period, the Hawks went on the power play 8 minutes in.  They appeared to score twice. Sharp blasted a shot that hit cross bar and post but failed to cross the line.  As play continued, Kane knocked one in on a rebound in front, but was called on having his stick above the cross bar.  Another power play came up empty after that. Off a crazy turnover, the Jackets tied the game at 2-2 (MacKenzie).  After 2 periods the Hawks out shot Columbus 22-16.

In the third period, the Hawks went on the power play. Patrick Sharp scored, no wait, disallowed. There was a high stick penalty called against the Hawks a second before the puck went in. Still tied at 2-2. Viktor Stalberg FINALLY did something for the Hawks, with an exclamation point. He scored twice in less than 2 minutes to put the Hawks up 4-2.  Hopefully this is the spark that he needs to get him back on track. Dave Bolland then scored, no wait, goal disallowed, kicked in, while on the power play. Toews was boarded, creating the penalty and hit the ice/boards awkwardly.  He came back out and looked fine, but will there be a suspension on that hit?  Not to be left out, Columbus had a goal kicked in and disallowed. Frolik scored a one handed, empty netter to make the final 5-2 Hawks.

The Hawks play again on Halloween night. If this game was “spooky”, I can’t wait to see what’s in store that night.
