The Blackhawks will kick off the preseason tonight with a game against the Edmonton Oilers. It will be played is Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at 8:00pm Central. The game will not be televised. Howvever, you can watch it stream live on chicagoblackhawks.com. The game will be called by John Weideman and Troy Murray. Slated to make the trip and play will be, last year’s late call up and playoff stand out, Ben Smith. Kyle Beach, Viktor Stalberg, Marcus Krueger will also be on board. On defense, Leddy, Lepisto, and Montador are scheduled to play. I will be looking forward to the Toews brothers, Jonathon and his younger brother David who the Hawks signed earlier this off season. It would be fun to see both of them appear on the ice together in some fashion.
Noticeably missing from the roster are Hossa, Seabrook, Keith, and Hjalmarsson. The Hawks, like most teams during the preseason, play more starters at home games than road games. The full roster for the game tonight can also be found on the official website, chicagoblackhawks.com.
Also missing from the line up is Patrick Sharp, who had the emergency appendix surgery a few weeks back. Patrick Kane, although making good progress and scrimmaging with the team will not make the trip. Kane may play at the Hawks home game coming up later.
Ray Emery and Alexander Salak will be on hand for net minding duties. As of this writing, there has been no announcement of who will start or if both will play. Corey Crawford is, of course in the number one spot for goal tending this year and will also not make the trip.
I watched the Leafs and Senators last night on the NHL Network as an appetizer for tonight. During the broadcast, it was mentioned that a few teams would be playing split squad games (a page out of baseball’s spring training). Some games would actually be played in the same building on the same day. The example they gave would be the first game at 3:00pm, followed by the second game at 7:00pm. A hockey double header. How great would that be to attend!
