The Hawks again picked up 2 points the dramatic way with a 3-2 overtime win against the San Jose Sharks. This now puts Coach Q only 3 wins away from the 600th victory mark. Ray Emery (5-1-2) got the nod. This was his first back to back starts as a Blackhawk, and probably not his last. Niemi (11-5-1) was between the pipes for the Sharks.
In the first period, Niemi came up early with a big save on Stalberg who AGAIN (remember that capitalizes word from last blog) could not connect in front. A couple of minutes later A Hawks Power Play netted nothing. The Hawks then on a Penalty Kill—76%, now in 27th place—cue the Jefferson’s cuz “We’re mov’n on up!” was successful. Another Hawks Penalty Kill, which looked more like a Power Play, was also very effective. Both Emery and Niemi played big in this period. However, McGinn, left alone in front (starting to really be a problem with our D-men) put in his own rebound. !-0 Sharks, and that’s how the period would end. The Hawks were out shot 17-8.
It was nice to see Doc Emerick in the booth with Pat Foley and Edzo during the second period, and was cool listening to the 3 of them during a game. By the way, in the NHL, the Hawks (37) and Sharks (35) were number one and two in second period scoring. The Hawks had another unsuccessful P.P. early. Daniel Carcillo moved back up to the first line and Stalberg back down to the fourth. Another AGAIN. The Hawks tied it 1-1 with Hjalmarsson cranking a blue line slapper that was redirected by Kruger. The period once again featured big saves by Emery and Niemi. However, a screened Emery had one go past him, 2-1 Sharks.
In the 3rd period, the Hawks lines were juggled all over the place. A Power Play, resulted in some good chances but nothing got past Nemo. With 1:10 left in regulation, Coach Q used his time out. Emery was pulled for the offensive zone face off. The Hawks won the draw and Hossa let go a blast that was redirected in front by Brunette. 2-2 tie game. The shot was the Hawks 15th of the period after only having 13 for the first 2 periods. The Sharks out shot the Hawks 36 to 29..We go again to overtime.
The Hawks had control of the puck for almost the entire O.T. Then with 34 seconds left, the brand new, first time dad, Patrick Sharp. won the game with a rebound off of a Hossa shot (Deja Vu). The Hawks do indeed win in dramatic fashion!
