Not to be left out of the fun to be had (or potential political advantage to be gained) by spending some time with the NHL, just as Sarah Palin dropped the puck at a Rangers vs. Flyers game, Stephen Harper took some time out to relax from the campaign with the Flames. (TSN footage)

Gerber Yes, Alfie Maybe For Friday’s Game

From James Gordon of the Ottawa Citizen,
“I’m not sure at this point,” Hartsburg said this morning when asked if Alfredsson could possibly play against the Phoenix Coyotes Friday or the Boston Bruins Saturday. “Every day he comes in and evaluates how he’s feeling, if there’s pain, if there’s swelling and so far, he’s been good.”
Hartsburg did commit to having goaltender Martin Gerber between the pipes Friday. Gerber played well for most of the 3-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings last Saturday, but gave up a questionable goal and the lead in the dying minutes.
Hartsburg didn’t say who would play Saturday. He’ll likely make that determination based on Gerber’s next performance.
Maybe Alfredsson should start being nicknamed ‘Claire’, or is that too obscure? You just can’t keep him down.
Glad to see that it’s only the story-hungry media and quick-to-judge fans who doubt Gerber’s ability and would seek to shelve him so quickly, but it would take a gamebreaking performance to stop Auld from starting in the back half of the back-to-back against his former team on Saturday.

Alfie To Undergo Knee Surgery
by SENShobo on 10/10/08 at 02:45 PM ET

From Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen,
Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, the team announced Friday.
The news comes as a shock - on the eve of Saturday’s visit by the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings. Alfredsson, the toast of Sweden during the club’s opening two games to the season, wasn’t available for comment Friday morning.
The Senators said the surgery is designed to remove a bone chip in his right knee that was dislodged during Sunday’s 3-1 win over the Penguins.
He is expected to miss three to four weeks.
The Senators’ captain will be missed, but hopefully with discipline, the team can rally around each other to keep their heads up until Alfie returns after what we can only hope will be a speedy recovery.
Update - 12:45pm
More details on the situation from Murray and Hartsburg, the new top line, and Fisher will play Saturday.

Ottawa Ready To Take On The Champs

While many have their focus on the game tonight between one storied franchise with a good chance of repeating as Cup champion and another with a good chance of extending its franchise record non-playoff streak, my focus is already on another game. Saturday night, after what is (almost) certain to be a glorious victory under their newest banner, the Detroit Red Wings will be the first guest of the season at Scotiabank Place.
The last time the Red Wings faced the Senators, they were the steady powerhouse, while Ottawa was easing into their downward spiral that would mar their early season dominance. That game held many special moments, both ones in which to bask, and others to be wary of.

About SENShobo
Native of Northern California. Hockey fan since 1998... sort of... there's a hiatus in there that I still can't explain.
I want to know about anything and everything related to the sport and the spectacle. I watch, I react, I write it down.
My interest in the Sharks was initially a matter of geographic convenience and regional loyalty because that seemed to be how it worked. I had no prior interest (at all-- AT ALL) in professional sports of any kind. When I met hockey, it might have set off a chain reaction of general sports fandom. It hasn't, I don't think it will. At all.
Since then, that interest developed into full blown (mostly sort of usually almost completely) exclusive loyalty to the Sharks.
I started blogging a couple years ago on wordpress. I still occasionally put things there that I don't think fit here because they are not about the Sharks. Wherever my words wander, here on Kuklas Korner, they will (usually) hang on to a teal thread.
I can be found in cyberspace on Twitter @petshark47, or emailed at talkingstick@petshark.net
