Canes blow late lead, then lose in shootout

On Tuesday night, the Hurricanes had a great chance to leapfrog the New York Rangers in the standings and move into seventh place in the East.  With two minutes left in the game, they had a 3-2 lead, and it looked they were indeed going to claim the regulation win and seventh place.  Instead, they gave up a late goal, then were beaten in the shootout.  The single point is pretty cool, but it isn’t at all what the Canes were hoping for.

Carolina defenseman Jay Harrison scored his second goal of the season in the first period, but he inadvertently tipped the game-tying goal into his own net at 18:10 of the third. Wojtek Wolski was credited with that goal, and he also “scored” the game-deciding goal in shootout.

Jussi Jokinen scored two third period goals for the Canes and Cam Ward made 43 saves.

Carolina will be off until Friday, when they host the Penguins.
