For the second time in as many weeks, the Hurricanes have ended up with a fourth line forward from the Anaheim Ducks. Last week, winger Troy Bodie was claimed off waivers. Today, the Canes acquired center Ryan Carter. He was placed on—and cleared—waivers on Monday. Carolina did not take him off waivers because they needed to shed some organizational contract weight first. This was accomplished when they exchanged two prospects for the NHL centerman. Carolina said goodbye to center Stephan Chaput and right wing Matt Kennedy. Both were in Charlotte this season. Kennedy had just one assist in eight games played while Chaput had three assists in 20 games played.
Carter and Bodie were fourth line mates in Anaheim two weeks ago. Now they find themselves linemates again after a bit of an unusual journey. Carter will wear Tom Kostopoulos’ old number 29. Jim Rutherford says that he will be used on the fourth line with a possibility that he could work his way into the top nine. He quickly added that those types of decisions are for coach Paul Maurice.
Both coach and GM said that the 6’2” Carter will help the Canes with their pathetic faceoff winning percentage. His success rate is just over 50%. He’ll also add a little bit of toughness and the willingness to hit. These are things that were lacking. He should be in the lineup on Wednesday when the Hurricanes host the Capitals.
