Carolina hosted a weekday matinee preseason game on Friday and they’ll head to Europe after beating Atlanta 2-1 in overtime. Brandon Sutter, who was just anointed alternate captain, provided all of the offense and Cam Ward was seconds away from his second straight shutout.
The Canes now leave for Europe, where they will begin the 2010-11 season. They’ll play an exhibition in Russia on Monday against SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL and they’ll begin the regular season in Helsinki on Thursday against the Wild. Like Carolina, Minnesota has three Finnish players on the squad, so this is very exciting for both teams and the locals.
After a scoreless first, Brandon Sutter put the home team ahead with a power play goal at 15:13 of the second. Joe Corvo and Joni Pitkanen got the assists.
With time winding down in the third, Atlanta pulled goaltender Ondrej Pavelec for the extra attacker, and it paid off. Nik Antropov, who was in the penalty box when Sutter scored, got the equalizer at 18:57 of the third.
Overtime didn’t last long. Sutter tapped home the game-winner at 1:06, assisted by Erik Cole and Jamie McBain. I’d say the kid has responded well to being named alternate captain.
The Hurricanes are, according to rumor, lobbying the NHL to provide some sort of on-line video feed for the SKA exhibition game, but I’m not going to hold my breath on that one. It should be pretty exciting, but it’s a little sad that Sergei Samsonov is injured and didn’t even make the trip. The next closest thing the Canes have to a Russian is Anton Babchuk, who was born in Soviet Ukraine.
The Canes wrapped up the NHL pre-season with a 3-2 record. They haven’t scored many goals, but they haven’t allowed many either. Cam Ward has been excellent in nets, so there shouldn’t be much to worry about there.
The puck will drop on the NHL season in less than six days!
