I look up, I look down. I look up, I look down….
After a successful West coast road trip, the Hurricanes returned home for a few days off before a big home game against the Panthers on Thursday. They took Monday off and when they returned to practice on Tuesday, a couple of the injured were there. Rod Brind’Amour, who was sent home to nurse his groin injury and defenseman Dennis Seidenberg practiced for the first time in a week. Brindy will hope to make a return to the lineup on Thursday, while Seidenberg will remain on the IR with his own groin issue.
Meanwhile, right wing Scott Walker continues to be totally out of commission with an “upper body” injury that is rumored to be a concussion. Now, though, there’s speculation that he’s suffering from vertigo.
Buried in an article about Brind’Amour, there’s a very interesting bit about Walker. The Hurricanes, along with the rest of the league, are reluctant to use “the c word” for some silly reason, always deflecting questions about concussions.
When asked if Walker suffered from a concussion, Maurice said, “I don’t want to put a diagnosis on it because I don’t think we’ve settled on one yet. We’re not sure if it was vertigo or he was having some problems, but he’s just not feeling well. We’re going to make sure he is feeling well before we put him back on the ice.”
Vertigo? Seriously? I know it sounds silly, but the ability to maintain one’s balance is pretty fundamental to playing hockey. Obviously, we hope that he hasn’t suffered a concussion. But honestly, it could be pretty damaging to his career if what he has is severe vertigo.
The acquisition of Jussi Jokinen is looking better and better. Any time you can get a useful player in exchange for two pieces of garbage and a meaningless draft pick, that’s a good thing. He may, though, have a bigger role with the team than we originally imagined.
