Following Saturday’s season finale against the Bruins, the Hurricanes assigned a slew of players to the Albany River Rats as they prepare for the Calder Cup Playoffs. The Rats finished second in the East division and will face either the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins or the Lowell Devils in the first round. Each of those teams plays its season finale today.
Tim Conboy had already been reassigned. He was joined by forwards Drayson Bowman, Zach Boychuk and Jerome Samson. Also, defensemen Casey Borer, Jamie McBain and Bryan Rodney were assingned. This article doesn’t name Jay Harrison as one of the assigned players, but he’s on the Clear Day roster, and I assume that it must have been an oversight to leave his name out.
Of the 22 players named to the Clear Day roster, 12 have played at least one game with the Hurricanes this season. Zac Dalpe is eligible to join the team in the playoffs despite not being on the list. After the Clear Day rosters were due, he left Ohio State to sign a pro contract. In nine Rats games, he scored six goals and added one assist.
If the Rats end up playing the Devils in the first round, it’ll bring up an awkward, but good situation for Rats fans. After this season, the Rats are moving to Charlotte. There’s talk of Albany securing another team—perhaps the Lowell Devils. While the Albany faithful will be rooting against these Devils for now, there’s a reasonable chance that they’ll be rooting for the very same Devils players next season.
The schedule isn’t fully determined yet, but the series will begin on Wednesday night in Albany.
