Part VIII: The one where there’s indie rock instead of pucks

The eighth and final part of a series wherein I look at the indie rock bands (that I know about and like) from each playoff team and guess who would win each series if it were a battle of the bands.

You’re invited to criticize me and my music taste as sharply as you wish.  You’re also invited to recommend things to me.  This includes but is not limited to: suggesting different stuff to listen to, suggesting a different team to root for, suggesting a rock for me to crawl under, etc.

SERIES #8: Chicago v Calgary

Chicago has a lot going on.  Most prominently, they have Wilco and Liz Phair.  Loose Fur.  They also have bands like The Jesus Lizard, The Sea and Cake and Tortoise.  Joan of Arc.  Cap’n Jazz.  Sarge.  Owls.

This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list, and I’m intentionally (and unintentionally) leaving some off, including some obvious ones.  It just occurred to me, for example, that when listing prominent NYC indie rock bands, I left off one of the biggest: Sonic Youth.  To tell a family secret, I actually don’t like Sonic Youth.  Also, Dinosaur Jr. was omitted from Boston’s list.  I’ve overlooked a lot of big things in these hastily-thrown together posts. Now I know that I should ask for help first if I try something like this in the future.  And knowing is half the battle.

Back to the task at hand.

As far as Calgary is concerned, I’m honestly clueless.  I know of just two.  Chad Van Gaalen and Tegan and Sara.  While Tegan and Sara don’t do a whole lot for me, the Chad Van Gaalen record does.

Except for Wilco, I’m kinda tired of the Chicago stuff that I’ve mentioned.  I know I’m missing a few, and I know also that I’m missing some major and minor bands from Calgary.  I’m torn on this one, and I’m actually tempted to give it to Calgary, despite my ignorance of their other indie rockers.

Who else is from Calgary that will make this easier?

To recap, I chose Boston’s indie rockers over Montréal’s, New York’s over Washington’s, Raleigh’s (Carolina) over Newark’s (NJD), Philly’s over Pittsburgh’s.  In the West, I’ve picked San Jose’s indie rockers over Anaheim’s, Detroit’s over Columbus’, Vancouver’s over St. Louis’, and I’m tempted to choose Chad Van Gaalen over Chicago.
