Flyers 2 - Canes 1

On Saturday, the Flyers handed the Hurricanes their third straight loss and their sixth in the last seven games.  Also, they scored their eleventh shorthanded goal of the season, and Jeff Carter scored his league leading 19th goal to win it in overtime.

Sergei Samsonov scored his third marker of the season early in the third period on a power play.  Although the Canes are still struggling with the power play, they have managed to score PP goals in two straight games.  It’s a small step, I know.

To add to Carolina’s injury woes, defenseman Nic Wallin left the game in the third period with what appeared to be a left ankle injury.  No call-up has been made for today’s game, but it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll play.  Add Wallin to the ever-growing list of injured defensemen.  Frantisek Kaberle.  Tim Gleason.  Dennis Seidenberg.  And of course goalie Cam Ward and winger Scott Walker are still out.  So far, the Hurricanes have 104 man-games lost to injury.

There were some positive things about the game.  After Leighton gave up a shortie to Mike Richards in the first period, the team didn’t get down on itself.  They played well, actually, in all three ends.  They had loads of quality chances against Nittymaki, but the Finn was razor sharp, stopping 35 of 36 shots.

On the other side, Michael Leighton wasn’t terrible, but he wasn’t great either.  The shorthanded goal was a breakaway situation, but he didn’t play it very well.  Generally speaking, he’s not using his size to his advantage.  The game winning goal was a bit of a freakish play, as it came directly off the faceoff, but it was a prime example of how Leighton doesn’t position himself very well with respect to the posts.

Still, Carolina played pretty well against a red-hot team and should be happy to have gotten a standings point out of it.

The Canes are back in action today with the last of the Sunday 5:00 matinee games.  They’ll be wearing the alternate black sweaters for the fifth time.
