Nearly ten months after suffering a broken neck in a bus accident, Canes defensive prospect Casey Borer is finally back on the ice. The River Rats team bus crashed on an icy road on February 19, and his injury was the most severe. Two other players and one of the radio broadcasting team were treated for serious injuries, but everyone else was lucky to escape with minor injuries.
The timetable was for Borer to come to camp ready to play and be back on the Albany roster this fall. Unfortunately, he suffered a setback. Or perhaps a bad diagnosis in the beginning. After some light workouts in the spring, he didn’t feel right and sought a second opinion. And a third. And a fourth. In the end, he ended up having some surgery in late September. As of right now, it looks like he’ll be out until at least the end of January, but he’s starting to make steps.
He’s still a ways away from returning to game action, but he’s started skating, and he knows that he’s going to have to earn his spot on the team.
“I’m in really good hands here with Geordie and Jeff (Daniels, head coach) and the whole staff and the team. I know that they’re going to get me ready to that whenever I feel comfortable, I can go in and try to earn a spot back.
I’m not expecting any handouts ... because I played here last year. That’s not even close. You look at their depth chart, and they’ve got eight great defensemen here right now. I’ve got a long way to go.”
Borer has appeared in 14 games for the Canes and has accumulated three (1/2) points. All of them came in the 2007-08 season, when he suited up for 11 Hurricanes games. He was selected in the third round of the 2004 draft and was a teammate of fellow River Rat Tim Conboy at
St. Cloud State University.
In other River Rats defenseman news, the Hurricanes recalled Brett Carson because Nic Wallin is unable to play tonight against the Pens.
