The trade deadline is rapidly approaching, and my opinion is that the Hurricanes will stand pat with the hand they have. There are some silly rumors that Carolina is shopping Joe Corvo and some even sillier ones that they’re interested in re-obtaining Martin Gerber. You might be able to guess my opinion on those.
Joe Corvo has been a little less productive offensively than the Canes were expecting, but better defensively than they were expecting. He’s a top pairing defenseman with a slightly inflated $2.75M salary next season. I’m not sure what the Canes would get in return. As it is, there’s plenty of “depth forwards” in the system. A d-for-d trade? Maybe. Maybe someone a little more defensive. I’m still not buying
As far as Gerber, I can’t understand what’s going on with him. He’s set to be a free agent and obviously hasn’t deserved his $3.7M salary this season. If he’s just a rental, Carolina would have pulled the trigger on the re-entry waiver wire rather than trade something away for him.
No. These two don’t make any sense, and unless someone is
bold enough to take Frantisek Kaberle off our hands and return something of quality this way (read: Tampa), I don’t see any moves happening. If Carolina does anything, it’ll only be minor.
Unfortunately, I work for a living, and while I’m at work I…. you know .... work. This means I won’t be plugged in to TSN.ca and NHL.com all day long tomorrow. I’ll have to rely on the text message updates from NHL.com.
