Canes assign three to Charlotte; Checkers begin play tonight

On Saturday, the Hurricanes announced that they have assigned three players to the AHL Charlotte Checkers.  Goaltender Justin Pogge, who traveled to Europe as a third goaltender, will be joined by defensemen Brett Carson and Bobby Sanguinetti in Charlotte.  The trio will not be available to the Checkers when they begin their season tonight.

The Checkers begin their first AHL season tonight in Hartford and will play in Springfield on Sunday afternoon and in Portland on Monday afternoon.  Three games in three days.  They’ll need all the healthy bodies they can get.  It’s likely that one of the two defensemen will be recalled before Carolina’s next game, which will be Thursday night in Ottawa.

Since Sergei Samsonov is injured and Jiri Tlusty not quite ready for NHL action after surgery this summer, it’s also possible that one of the young forwards could be called from Charlotte to join the big team.

After the back-to-back-to-back situation, the Checkers will have three days off before their home opener against the Baby Penguins on Friday.
