The Puck Stops Here

Worst 20 Players By Corsi Rate

The flipside to the best 20 players by their 2011/12 Corsi Rate is the worst 20 players.  This is something that is calculated on the website behind the net.  This selects players who have poor puck possession relative to their teammates.  This can occur for several reasons.  The most likely is the player in question is not very good but there are clear examples of players who made this list because of their playing tough defensive roles on their team.

Here are the 20 worst players by adjusted Corsi rate in 2011/12:

Manny Malhotra leads this list by a significant margin.  He also hadmore defensive zone starts than anyone since that stat was kept by a significant margin.  His appearance here is largely due to playing a tough role in Vancouver Thus it is likely correct that Jim Slater or Eric Boulton were actually the worst the puck possession players according to this method if any reasonable correction for zone starts is made.

This rate adjustment to Corsi ratings is harder to make such an adjustement to than a study using raw numbers.  Thus I think it is superior to start from raw numbers.  However there is value to this method as well.  It is always useful to measure things by multiple methods.  Though they wilol not all agree in their exact rankings of what is measured you gain a better understanding of the overall picture by doing this.  As a non-hockey example.  If you ask me which animal is the biggest in the zoo, I might measure their heights and conclude its a giraffe or measure their weights and conclude its an elephant. There is nothing wrong with the height and weight measurements even though they prduced different leaders.  This is an opportunity to better understand the differences in what we are measuring.  Similarly Manny Malhotra has the worst rate adjusted Corsi.  Other players wind up worst on other lists.  We can use our judgement and understanding to see what thay means.  In this case the biggest reason for Malhotra’s low ranking is his record high number of defensive zone starts.

Not to nit-pick but Handzus was a Shark last season. Still is.

If only L.A. were actually willing to take him back.

Scooter, I am the one deleting your comments, just the two you have posted here.

First off, you talk about journalistic integrity when you have used three user names while posting comments.

Secondly, this is not the place to make comments like you are.  If you want, you have the ability to post a blog in the KK members section.

Here, you need to keep it on topic and not slam the author, unless you are challenging twhat was written in the post.

I like Handzus as a player, and I think that with the new ACs his value might become more evident this season.  I don’t expect Wilson to be able to move him if he wants to, and he was very good defensively for LA.  I think his ranking on this list is just a reflection of how completely tangled up the Sharks were last season.  Ah, it’s nice to say “last season.”  Done, over with.
