I have already posted the players with the top 20 adjusted +/- ratings as a counting stat and as a rate stat. It is time to look at the flip side of these numbers and see who is failing in the role and putting up a bad adjusted +/-. Today, I will post the counting stat list.
Here it is:
Rank | Player | Team | Adj +/- |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rod Brind’Amour | Car | -25.2 |
| 2 | Patrick O’Sullivan | Edm | -23.6 |
| 3 | Michael Del Zotto | NYR | -20.0 |
| 4 | Ruslan Fedotenko | Pit | -19.0 |
| 5 | Matt Hunwick | Bos | -18.6 |
| 6 | Jack Johnson | LA | -18.2 |
| 7 | Chris Butler | Buf | -17.6 |
| 7 | Kyle Okposo | NYI | -17.6 |
| 7 | Shawn Horcoff | Edm | -17.6 |
| 10 | Clarke MacArthur | Buf | -16.6 |
| 10 | Dennis Wideman | Bos | -16.6 |
| 12 | Dustin Byfuglien | Chi | -16,2 |
| 13 | Todd Marchant | Ana | -15.8 |
| 14 | Marek Svatos | Col | -15.6 |
| 14 | Eric Brewer | StL | -15.6 |
| 14 | Ed Jovanovski | Pho | -15.6 |
| 17 | Darcy Hordichuk | Van | -15.2 |
| 17 | Zach Bogosian | Atl | -15.2 |
| 19 | Jonathan Ericsson | Det | -15.0 |
| 20 | Kevin Klein | Nas | -14.6 |
The players in this list must have played at least fifty games in the 2009/10 season with one team (if they played with more than one team, their 50+ games with one team are used and the results with the other team are not included).
For the most part this is a list of players who nobody considered the stars of their teams. Most would be seen by their local fans as players who had poor seasons. There are a few with solid reputations throughout the league (probably Dustin Byfuglien leads this list thanks to the playoffs - maybe Chicago could move him for salary cap reasons and not be impacted as much as other players).
Former two time Selke Trophy winner Rod Brind’Amour leads this list. His career has fallen apart in the last couple years with his increasing age. He was the worst on this list last year as well. Brind’Amour shows that using faceoffs as an argument for the Selke Trophy is weak. He finished third in the league this year with a 58.8% winning record and his poor performance (including poor defence) has him last in the league in adjusted +/-. It is possible to have a top faceoff winning record and be poor defensively. In fact, Carolina improved this season when they reduced Brind’Amour’s role with the team.
This adjusted +/- list gives a group of players who performed poorly in their roles in 2009/10. These are players who should see reduced roles in the future, if their team has the depth to do so and assuming their performance is repeatable. For example, rookie Michael Del Zotto will likely improve with age, though he was over his head defensively much of 2009/10. If your team is depending upon any of these players in the future, probably your future is not very bright.

This post does not have Tony’s tag, so you asked your question in the wrong place, but yes Paul is in Las Vegas for the awards show and Tony has picked up some of the slack.
