The Puck Stops Here

Worst 20 Players By Raw Corsi

Today I continue my summer sabermetrics posts by looking at the worst 20 players in 2015/16 by their raw unadjusted Corsi score.  These are the players who were on the ice for the most attempted shots against while they were on the ice in 5 on 5 situations minus attempted hots by their own teams.  These are players who struggle in puck possession on teams that struggle in puck possession.  Further work is required to remove team effects and make this more of an individual number.  I have already posted the top 20 players so we can compare top players with underachievers.

Here are the worst 20 players in 2015/16 by raw Corsi:

1. Dan Girardi New York Rangers -389
2. Francois Beauchemin Colorado Avalanche -378
3. Jarret Stoll New York Rangers/Minnesota Wild -331
4. Tyson Barrie Colorado Avalanche -298
5. Nick Holden Colorado Avalanche -293
6. Jarome Iginla Colorado Avalanche -290
7. Andy Green New Jersey Devils -276
8. Erik Johnson Colorado Avalanche -274
9. Rasmus Ristolainen Buffalo Sabres -254
10. Cody Ceci Ottawa Senators -237
11. John Mitchell Colorado Avalanche -234
12. Adam Larsson New Jersey Devils -230
13. Josh Gorges Buffalo Sabres -227
14. John Moore New Jersey Devils -226
15. Kris Russell Calgary Flames/Dallas Stars -222
16. Curtis Lazar Ottawa Senators -217
16. Marc Staal New York Rangers -217
18. Gregory Campbell Columbus Blue Jackets -213
18. Dominic Moore New York Rangers -213
20. David Jones Calgary Flames/Minnesota Wild -212

As usual few teams are represented here and they are the worst puck possession teams in the league.  Assigning players to the team they started their season (since three players were traded)  we have eight teams represented.  There are six Colorado Avalanche, 4 New York Rangers, 3 New Jersey Devils, 2 Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames and Buffalo Sabres and one Columbus Blue Jacket.  Of these teams only the New York Rangers made the playoffs.

At the top (or bottom) of the list is Ranger defenceman Dan Girardi who had a significant amount of ice time and struggled with it.  Several defencemen who played a reasonable amount of ice time are here including Francois Beauchemin, Tyson Barrie, Erik Johnson and Adam Larsson.  Larsson is an interesting case partially because he was just involved in a high profile trade to the Edmonton Oilers and  because he posted a very good adjusted +/- rating.  Jarome Iginla is a future Hall of Famer who makes this list.  He is in the decline phase of his career and playing on a poor puck possession team.

These Corsi ratings show players who were on the ice when their opponents had the puck.  We need to remove team effects to begin to turn this into an individualized statistic and I will do that in the future.
