Worst 20 Players By Adjusted Corsi (Rate Stat)

I am continuing my summer sabermetrics and hockey series today by looking at the 20 worst players in the 2013/14 season by adjusted Corsi rate.  Corsi is the difference between attempted shots taken by a team and their opponents when a given player is on the ice in 5 on 5 situations.  This is a gage of puck possession, but it is a team gage and not an individual one.  In order to make it an individual gage, the Corsi rating must be adjusted for the team that a player plays on as well as their usage by that team as shown by their zone starts.  This list is then expressed as a rate stat by dividing it by the amount of ice time a player plays in 5 on 5 situations.  This should give a list of poor puck possession players.  In order to assure that players on the list played a sufficient number of games to have a meaningful rating, this list is limited to players who played at least 50 games played in the 2013/14 season.

Here are the worst 20 players by adjusted Corsi rate in 2013/14:

Rank Player Team Corsi
1 Brian McGratton Calgary -0.362
2 Mike Brown San Jose -0.325
3 Douglas Murray Montreal -0.299
4 Shawn Thornton Boston -0.290
5 Zac Dalpe Vancouver -0.276
6 Tom Sestito Vancouver -0.264
7 Luke Gazdic Edmonton -0.259
8 Tanner Glass Pittsburgh -0.256
9 Marc-Andre Cliche Colorado -0.234
10 Gregory Campbell Boston -0.232
11 Patrick Bordeleau Colorado -0.225
12 Rob Scuderi Pittsburgh -0.224
13 Ryan White Montreal -0.217
14 Craig Adams Pittsburgh -0.215
15 Carl Gunnarsson Toronto -0.213
16 Taylor Pyatt Pittsburgh -0.206
17 Deryk Engelland Pittsburgh -0.202
18 Francis Bouillon Montreal -0.201
19 Nate Guenin Colorado -0.200
20 Daniel Paille Boston -0.197

This list goes a long way to supporting the fact that this is a useful measure of puck possession.  All of the players on this list are borderline NHL players.  There isn't a single player on this list that would surprise me if he was outside of the NHL in the next year or two.  While it is true that puck possession isn't everything to measure the value of an NHL player, any player who ranks this poorly doesn't have much NHL value.

Brian McGratton is a goon with limited talent who leads this list.  The Flames have him signed for next season and thus he will likely help to bring the team down into the future.  Mike Brown, Douglas Murray, Shawn Thornton and Zac Dalpe are other players who are at the top of this dishonor.

This list shows the value of Corsi anaylsis instead of looking at raw numbers.  In fact, if we look at the 20 worst players by raw Corsi only one of them remains on this list.  It is Carl Gunnarsson who spent 2013/14 in Toronto.  His league worst raw Corsi is the 15th worst after all analysis is completed.
