Top Goalie So Far

A few weeks ago I picked Semyon Varlamov of the Colorado Avalanche as the top goalie so far in the season.  Varlamov was off to a great start but he has had some off-ice problems.  He was arrested for domestic violence.  Perhaps this is straining his play.  His numbers have fallen in his limited play since the arrest.  Thus it is time to pick a new top goalie.  My pick is Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins.  He is posting a 1.68 GAA and a .942 saves percentage while carrying the load in goal.

Rask has taken over as Boston's top goalie when Tim Thomas departed.  While it is hard to replace a legend, who has won multiple awards and lead his team to the Stanley Cup, it might be easier in this case.  Thomas was not well-liked by his teammates.  Rask has a lot of talent.  He has shown himself to be capable of this job.  Tuukka Rask has been the best goalie so far this season.

I vote for Josh Harding.  He’s played his way into a full on tandem if not having claimed the job outright.  13 starts, 8-2-2, 1st in GAA amongst goalies with more than 3 starts with 1.16, 1st in Save % of goalies with over 4 starts(!) with .949. And 2 shutouts.

I do admit that Rask is off to a great start.  But the stats are almost identical to Harding’s except Harding’s are a tad better.

I bet Varlamov’s wife begs to differ

Harding has faced about 100 fewer shots than Rask.  If he can get up to Rask’s workload without a noticeable drop in his numbers, he might be a new front-runner.
