The Puck Stops Here

Top 20 Players By Raw Corsi

Today I am returning to my summer sabermetrics series.  I want to start looking at Corsi analysis.  Corsi is a measure of puck possession.  It is the difference between attempted shots (shots on goal, missed shots and blocked shots) between a team and their opponents at even strength when a given player is on the ice.  I will start by listing the top 20 players by their raw (unadjusted) Corsi rating.  This is strongly team dependent.  Players on good teams will have better Corsis than those on weak teams.  Thus we will quickly see that we have to adjust for individual team to begin to make an individual player ranking.

Here are the top 20 players by Corsi in 2015/16:

1. Drew Doughty Los Angeles Kings +537
2. Milan Lucic Los Angeles Kings +422
3. Jake Muzzin Los Angeles Kings +404
4. Tyler Toffoli Los Angeles Kings +398
5. Brayden McNabb Los Angeles Kings +389
6. Hampus Lindholm Anaheim Ducks +346
7. Victor Hedman Tampa Bay Lightning +332
7. Anze Kopitar Los Angeles Kings +332
9. Dustin Brown Los Angeles Kings +326
10. John Klingberg Dallas Stars +320
11. Nick Shore Los Angeles Kings +298
12. Tomas Hertl San Jose Sharks +273
13. Mike Ribiero Nashville Predators +272
14. Filip Forsberg Nashville Predators +270
15. Patric Hornqvist Pittsburgh Penguins +263
16. Josh Manson Anaheim Ducks +262
17. Kris Versteeg Carolina Hurricanes/Los Angeles Kings +258
18. Joe Thornton San Jose Sharks +257
19. Craig Smith Nashville Predators +253
20. Jeff Carter Los Angeles Kings +251

As we can see, the Los Angeles Kings dominate this list.  Half the players on this list played with the Kings last year (including Kris Versteeg who was acquired during the season from Carolina).  This is a result of Los Angeles being the best Corsi team in the NHL last year.  Additionally there are three Nashville Predators, two San Jose Sharks, 2 Anaheim Ducks and one player each from Tampa Bay, Dallas and Pittsburgh.  These players are all form the best teams in the NHL.

Drew Doughty leads this list and that is a significant reason why he was chosen as the Norris Trophy winner.  He is benefitted by being a Los Angeles King but clearly this number requires him talent as he is more than 100 points ahead of any other player.  Next up is Milan Lucic, who is now an Edmonton Oiler.  Interestingly Nick Shore is 11th.  He is a player who had puck possession problems according to his adjusted +/- rating.  He had the 13th worst adjusted +/- in the league.  I think it is interesting that he can be on the top unadjusted Corsi list and the worst adjusted +/- list simultaneously.

This group of players is the 20 players who were on teams that had the best puck possession when they were on the ice at even strength.  More work is required to try to remove team effects from these numbers.  I will do that in the future.
