The Puck Stops Here

Team Canada 2012

Since the Summer Olympics are here it is time to make a midterm Canadian Olympic Team.  This is not a prediction of who will make the Olympic Team in 2014 but rather who I would put on a team were the Olympic tournament to occur right now.  The problem with projecting to 2014 is it can be hard to properly project young players.  Will Ryan Nugent-Hopkins deserve a spot on the Olympic team in 2014?  Perhaps he will and perhaps he won’t but right now he shouldn’t be on the team.  I do not want to build a team based only upon projections of how players might develop.

Here are my picks for a Canadian Olympic Team should one be picked right now:

Patrice Bergeron Boston Bruins
Sidney Crosby Pittsburgh Penguins
Ryan Getzlaf Anaheim Ducks
Claude Giroux Philadelphia Flyers
Rick Nash New York Rangers
Corey Perry Anaheim Ducks
Jason Spezza Ottawa Senators
Martin St Louis Tampa Bay Lightning
Eric Staal Carolina Hurricanes
Steve Stamkos Tampa Bay Lightning
John Tavares New York Islanders
Joe Thornton San Jose Sharks
Jonathan Toews Chicago Blackhawks

Drew Doughty Los Angeles Kings
Mike Green Washington Capitals
Duncan Keith Chicago Blackhawks
Kris Letang Pittsburgh Penguins
Alex Pietrangelo St Louis Blues
Brent Seabrook Chicago Blackhawks
Shea Weber Nashville Predators

Roberto Luongo Vancouver Canucks
Carey Price Montreal Canadiens
Mike Smith Phoenix Coyotes

Luongo posted a better saves percentage this year and in the last few years and he was good eough to win gold in 2010 - but you guys like the narrative that he cant win….

Brodeur in 2014 might be pushing it, but I think the bottom line is, goaltending is not Canada’s strong point at this point in time.  Smith has skills but he certainly demonstrated that he’s an old school headcase type of goalie during the playoffs this year.

I’m also guessing Eberle might have as good or better chance of cracking the line up than RNH.  Kid has played exceptionally well at the international level throughout juniors and even at the WHC more recently.

I question Tavares and Getzlaf being on the team. Getzlaf stuggled at the WC in Finland this year and has motivation problems. Tavares is slow, but he does make up for it a lttle bit with big game intensity. Doan has a bigger heart and leadership skills, but he will be old in 2014.

I imagine we’ll have the Nuge as our #1 Centre by then.  Surprised none of the ‘Kid Line’ is on there.  I’d expect them to not only all make it, but to play together like Babs did with the SJ trio in 2010.

Really? There are people who think Brodeur, in 2012, is one of the best three Canadian goalies?

Brodeur is an average goalie at best these days. He has been outplayed by his own backups for the last four years. From 2008-09 until now, the Devils as a team had a better winning percentage, stopped a greater percentage of shots against, and had a better GAA with the combination of Hedberg, McKenna, Danis, Clemmensen and Weekes than they did with Brodeur.

James Neal over gets laughs and st. Hubert easily.

I’d use Marleau over Nash (Marleau is better defensively, and offensively he’s comparable).
