Radko Gudas And His Puck Possession

Yesterday I posted the top 20 players by team and zone adjusted Corsi ratings.  This is a group of players who were puck possession starts in the 2015/16 season.  Perhaps the biggest surprise player on the list is Radko Gudas of the Philadelphia Flyers.  He is 17th with a +170.4 adjusted Corsi.  This leads the Philadelphia Flyers.

Gudas was in his first year in Philadelphia after spending the first three years of his NHL career with the Tampa Bay Lightning.  He was traded along with a first and third round draft pick in 2015 (the first rounder was traded to Columbus and Gabriel Carlsson was selected.  Majek Tomek was the third round selection) in exchange for Brayden Coburn.  This appears to be a very one-sided trade in favor of the Flyers.  Gudas returned from knee surgery at the start of the season.  He wound up the Flyer defenceman with the most total ice time last season.  Offensively he didn't make much of an impact.  He scored 5 goals and 9 assists for 14 points.

His reputation is as a tough hitting defenceman.  This got him in trouble with a three game suspension after a hit on Mike Zabinejad of the Ottawa Senators.  He is a physical player who can drive the play on the ice.  Opposing players are aware of him and often tend to avoid getting in a position where he can hit them.  He finished second in hits in the NHL behind only Matt Martin last year.

While Gudas doesn't score he is very good at keeping the puck in his team's direction.  He has a reputation as a poor puck moving defenceman but statistics show he is very good at entering the offensive zone carrying the puck.

Radko Gudas had a strong 2015/16 season by puck possession metrics.  He does this with physical play and underrated puck moving skills.  He is a strong player on the Philadelphia Flyers defence.  He is an example of a player that Corsi selects as a strong player that is often overlooked by fans.

this was the one bad move by yzerman . you dont move a competetive rugged animal like gudas , a very rare individual . and that stocky oak trunk body makes him durable . i was very disappointed when he was moved and wings didnt get involved
