Olympic Hockey - Medal Round

The Olympics hockey tournament completed today.  Here was my report on the preliminary round and here was the playoffs.  These are the medal round games.

Semi-Finals

Sweden 2 Finland 1.  Finland opened the scoring in the second period with an Olli Jokinen goal.  Loui Eriksson tied the game for Sweden five minutes later.  Erik Karlsson gave the Swedes a lead with a power play goal later in the second period.  Henrik Lundqvist made 25 saves for the win.  Kari Lehtonen took the loss for the Finnish team.  This puts Sweden in the gold medal game and Finland in the bronze game.

Canada 1 USA 0.  Strong goaltending was the story of this game.  Carey Price made 31 saves for the shutout victory.  Only Jamie Benn was able to beat Jonathan Quick with a second period goal.  Quick made 36 saves in the losing effort.  This puts Canada in the gold medal game and USA in the bronze game.

Bronze/ 4th Game

Finland 5 USA 0.  The US team did not seem to be in this game.  They looked beaten and demoralized since they were not playing for gold. Finland's offence was led by two goals from Teemu Selanne.  Jussi Jokinen added a goal and an assist.  Mikael Granlund and Jori Lehtera each added two assists.  Tuukka Rask stopped 27 shots for a shutout.  Jonathan quick was the losing American goalie.  Finland repeats as the bronze medalist.

Gold/Silver Game

Canada 3 Sweden 0.  Canada played a strong game without giving Sweden much chance to control play.  Jonathan Toews, Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz added a goal each.  One was scored in each period.  Carey Price had a strong game in goal with a 24 save shutout.  Henrik Lundqvist was the losing Swedish goalie.  Canada repeats as gold medalist and Sweden wins silver.

The tournament directorate selects Phil Kessel of USA as the top forward in the tournament.  Erik Karlsson of Sweden was the top defenceman.  Carey Price was named the top goalie.  The media selected Teemu Selanne of Finland as the MVP, despite the fact the directorate did not see him as the top forward.  The media all star team snubbed Carey Price by selecting Henrik Lundqvist as their goalie to go with Erik Karlsson, Drew Doughty, Teemu Selanne, Phil Kessel and Mikael Granlund.
