The Puck Stops Here

If I Had An Award Ballot

Every year, I write my annual post on who I would be voting for if I had a chance to vote for the NHL awards.  Here was last year’s picks.  These are not predictions of who will win the awards; they are my picks as to who is most worth of winning.

Selke Trophy - 1. Jordan Staal Pittsburgh Penguins 2. Patrick Marleau San Jose Sharks 3. Jay McClement St Louis Blues Here is why I pick Staal and why I dislike several of the other top contenders.  I think that three of Ryan Kesler, Pavel Datsyuk and Jonathan Toews and Staal will likely be nominated, so I expect that my other contenders wind up missing out.

Masterton Trophy - 1. Patrice Bergeron Boston Bruins 2. Kurtis Foster Tampa Bay Lightning 3. Brian Pothier Carolina Hurricanes When the Masterton Trophy nominations were announced (can anyone help fill in the missing 3 holes - Dallas, Edmonton and NY Islanders), we saw that Bergeron and Pothier did not get nominated for their respective teams.  They both overcame significant injury that had their careers in jeopardy to make an impact this year.  Instead their teams nominated veterans Mark Recchi and Rod Brind’Amour, who have less chance at winning the overall trophy.  I expect to see Jose Theodore get consideration and possibly win this award, due to the death of his child.

Lady Byng Trophy - 1. Martin St Louis Tampa Bay Lightning 2. Brad Richards Dallas Stars 3. Anze Kopitar Los Angeles Kings Here is why I support St Louis.  I believe that my picks should mirror the NHL picks on this award.

Adams Trophy -   1. Dave Tippett Phoenix Coyotes 2. Jacques Lemaire New Jersey Devils 3. Barry Trotz Nashville Predators Here is where I support Tippett.  Dave Tippett will likely win this award for the job he did in Phoenix, but I am uncertain the rest of my nominees will match the NHL’s picks.  I think Joe Sacco will have some support for Colorado’s playoff berth, but I don’t think his coaching was as big a factor in it as the coaches of the teams I picked.

Calder Trophy -   1. Jimmy Howard Detroit Red Wings 2. Tyler Myers Buffalo Sabres 3. Tuukka Rask Boston Bruins
Here is why I support Howard, though Myers is also a strong candidate.  I think Matt Duchene may by the third nominee in the NHL, but Rask had a stronger season.

Norris Trophy -   1. Duncan Keith Chicago Blackhawks 2. Mike Green Washington Capitals 3. Drew Doughty Los Angeles Kings Here is why I support Keith.  I think these nominations could mirror the NHL.

Vezina Trophy -   1. Ryan Miller Buffalo Sabres 2. Tomas Vokoun Florida Panthers 3. Jimmy Howard Detroit Red Wings I think it is clear that Ilya Bryzgalov will be nominated here.  I think Bryzgalov is a poor pick; he is an attempt to credit Phoenix’s improved defence to one player, when it is not a one player improvement.  Here is why I support Miller.

Hart Trophy -   1. Alexander Ovechkin Washington Capitals 2. Sidney Crosby Pittsburgh Penguins 3. Henrik Sedin Vancouver Canucks I think a lot of pundits will make it a big deal in their picks that Crosby wound up with the same number of points as Ovechkin with one more goal, but that is a tiny statistical fluke for people to mull over that does not change things significantly.  I think Ovechkin was the most dominant player in the league this year and here is why I support him for Hart.  I kind of regret that Ryan Miller is not a nominee, he had a season worthy of nomination and I place him fourth.

All Star Teams   First -  Alexander Ovechkin Washington Capitals Sidney Crosby Pittsburgh Penguins Martin St Louis Tampa Bay Lighting Duncan Keith Chicago Blackhawks Mike Green Washington Capitals Ryan Miller Buffalo Sabres Second - Daniel Sedin Vancouver Canucks Henrik Sedin Vancouver Canucks Marian Gaborik New York Rangers Drew Doughty Los Angeles Kings Chris Pronger Philadelphia Flyers Tomas Vokoun Florida Panthers Third - Patrick Marleau San Jose Sharks Steve Stamkos Tampa Bay Lightning Dany Heatley San Jose Sharks Nicklas Lidstrom Detroit Red Wings Tyler Myers Buffalo Sabres Jimmy Howard Detroit Red Wings

As for Crosby vs. Ovechkin.  Oveckhin is much better at the puck control game as his Corsi or +/- show.

Yeah, but when you watch the games you come to a completely different conclusion as to who is better at controlling the game from thier puck handling abilities/skill.
Also, do you have an All-Rookie Team?
