Flyers Ten Game Winning Streak

The hottest team in the NHL right now is the Philadelphia Flyers.  They have won their last ten games in a row.  This gives them a 19-13 record with three regulation tie points.  They have 41 points on the season.  This puts them in third place in the Metropolitan Division.  Their record before this winning streak was 9-13.  It took this winning streak to make the Flyers look like a playoff team.

A big reason for their improvement is goaltending.  Steve Mason has posted a .926 saves percentage and a 2.33 goals against average during the streak.  Before it, he had a .892 saves percentage and a 3.04 GAA.  Michal Neuvirth has been hurt during this streak but he posted a .859 saves percentage and a 3.54 GAA so far this year.  Their goaltending is improved but there are better goaltenders in the league.  Thus it takes more than goaltending for a 10 game winning streak.

Jakub Voracek has 16 points in the streak and 17 in the 22 games before it.  That makes him the highest scoring player in the league during this stretch.

These are good performances but they are not enough to explain a 10-0 run.  The biggest explanation for this streak is luck.  The Flyers scored 13 more goals than their opponents in the streak.  That is only three more goals than the minimum that they would have if they won each game by one goal.  During the same period, the Pittsburgh Penguins played eight games and outscored their opponents by 20 goals and have a loss to show for it.  They have been a better team than the Flyers recently but do not have a 10 game winning streak.

The Philadelphia Flyers are a hot team in the midst of a 10 game winning streak.  They have shown considerable improvement in goal and a strong performance from Jakub Voracek during that run.  However, this streak has been a resul of luck as much as skill.
