Carolina’s Scheduling Problem

NHL teams have had to submit the dates that will be available for home games in the 2013/14 season by June 1st.  The Carolina Hurricanes had a problem making this deadline.  The Hurricanes share the PNC Arena with the North Carolina State Wolfpack NCAA Basketball team.  Contractually NC State has first dibs on home game dates (college basketball is more important than hockey in North Carolina).  NC State reserved so many days for potential home games that there are not enough dates left over for the Hurricanes to play their schedule.  Unable to negotiate a solution with NC State, Carolina submitted a list of available dates for home games that overlap the games NC State reserved.  It is quite possible that there will be clashes.

The NHL is set to release its schedule in mid-July.  The NCAA basketball schedule comes out in late August, so it won't be until then that we know if there are any clashes for the PNC Arena availability.

The NHL has the right to fine the Hurricanes $100,000 for each game that has to be rescheduled.  Many believe that the NHL won't hold the Hurricanes responsible for circumstances outside their control, but nothing is certain.  Potentially this makes the NHL scheduling this summer much more difficult.

Once again evidence of the fallacy of US Market size in the Southern Expansion ‘plan’.

NHL is a niche Canadian/Regional Sport and it will work a lot better when it stops trying to pretend to be a National Sport in the South of California outside the truly largest markets. On wonder when the Owners of the money making teams except for Toronto will side together a push to flip a revenue sharing sucking, money loosing team to Ontario
