Calgary Fires GM Jay Feaster

The Calgary Flames have fired General Manager Jay Feaster today.  He had a slightly under three year run as their GM as he was hired in December 2010 when he took over for Darryl Sutter.  During that time Calgary never made the playoffs.  Their playoff prospects are not looking any better today than when he was hired.  Brian Burke takes over as an interim GM.  He claims that he will step aside when a new GM is hired, but it is hard to believe that he will be really out of the picture.  Any new GM is likely to have Burke looking over his shoulder.

Feaster is seen as an NHL capable GM because he was a Stanley Cup winning GM in Tampa Bay but he did it largely with a team built before he arrived.  Feaster's background is in legal and contractual issues and not in hockey player development.  His skillset is better as an assistant GM than as a full-fledged GM.

Brian Burke is clearly a more talented proven GM.  It isn't clear how much he wants to be a general manager again, but he might decide he wants the job after he has an interim run.  If not it isn't clear who would take over as the Calgary GM.  It isn't clear how autonomous the new hire would be from Burke.

Calgary needs a change.  They need a competent GM.  Brian Burke could be that man.  The fear is that he won't officially want the job and will install a puppet for him to manage through.  That is far more likely to be a recipe for disaster.
