Earlier this season I picked Mike Smith of the Tampa Bay Lightning as the best goaltender so far this season. His fast start is over and he seems to be dropping off of his early levels. I think the best goalie so far this season has been Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins.
Tim Thomas has the league leading saves percentage at .944 and a very good 1.85 goals against average. Thomas is doing this with a heavy workload of over 33 shots per game. He is one of the reasons Boston is off to a respectable start.
Thomas was not expected to be a top NHL goalie. He was 32 the first year he played over 40 games and became a legitimate starter. Last year he had a very good season. I had him in the as the Vezina leader into February before he dropped off last season.
I mentioned earlier that my top goalie pick in Mike Smith was not on the All Star ballot. Tim Thomas, the new leader is not there either. The NHL did not do a good job forecasting their best players so far this year when they made the ballot up.
Tim Thomas is one of the better goalies in the league. Many people have not noticed yet because he was older than most goalies when he first became a starter.
